My wife and I come to West Baden Springs Hotel 3 to 4 times a year. We absolutely love it here as a quick getaway (we live in Indianapolis). The hotel is breathtaking and the rooms are gorgeous with exceptional dining. We like to spend time at the casino which has a great single level layout. We also like to spend time at Patoka Lake or driving up to Gashtof Amish Village for the absolute best authentic Amish buffet we have ever had. While you are here don't forget to do some wine tasting at the French Lick Winery, they have some pretty awesome flavors. French Lick is a small town and true there is not a whole lot to do here but for us that is the attraction, peace and quiet.

We didn't have enough time to go inside the museum but outside the museum there are several trains on display including some cars from the South Shore that my husband remembered from when he was a kid.

There's no charge to take a look at the trains outside.

French Lick Springs Resort & Spa

French Lick Springs Resort & Spa

Unlike the resort in neighboring West Baden, the French Lick Springs Resort & Spa survived the Great Depression and is still a functioning hotel.

Like the spa in West Baden, it had mineral springs believed to cure all kinds of ailments. All but one of the springs was capped, the surviving spring is at French Lick.

Although we did not stay here overnight, we did pop into the hotel for a look around. Neither the interior or exterior is as grand as the West Baden Resort but the 471 room hotel is still impressive.

    West Baden Springs Hotel

Built in 1902, the same year as the rival French Lick Springs Hotel a short distance away, West Baden Springs Hotel is a National Historic Landmark. The soaring atrium was for sixty years the largest of its kind in the world, and it still takes your breath away. The hotel was closed for many years and in a serious state of decay. Now, after more than $30 million in renovations it is still far from being completed. However several opportunities are available for the those who want to see this magnificent and unique treasure. We took the tour on a Sunday afternoon and found it an experience not to be missed. Check the website below for tour times.
