Check out the high school basketball games. There have always been some really hot teams in Gary, and these players love the game!
Since people are apparently so concerned about safety in the city of Gary:
The games I went to (at Lew Wallace, West Side, and Horace Mann High Schools) had police officers to ensure safety, as well as metal detectors at the doors.
The basketball games are awesome!!!
Two years in the making, the most talked about and controversial plan in Gary is now a reality. And opening day was beautiful, except for the 8-4 loss in the 11th inning. The team takes it's name from the South Shore trains that glide past the outfield wall. See my travelogue, US Steel Yard, for more images and ruminations on Gary's attempt at downtown revitalization.
The Steelheads are part of the long-lived, seemingly impossible to kill Continental Basketball Association. The season runs from November to the end of March. Tickets range from $10-$14, a bit pricey for the quality of basketball in my opinion. Courtside seats go for $39 and are not even worth it.
The quality of play is pretty selfish and can be quite sloppy, but every once in awhile you'll see a play that'll make you say, 'Damn!' That's the CBA for you... and hey, what else is there to do during these cold Indiana winters.
The food is provided by local restaurants and is well priced and usually excellent.
