Rathskeller: German food but not for Germans

    by angel_del_fondo Written Nov 3, 2006 3 reviews

This restaurant is famous for its German food but if you come from Germany or Austria and want to eat "Wiener Schnitzel" better leave it. The american Schnitzels aren't as good as the ones you know from restaurants in Europe. I thought they tasted a bit sweet and they do not have the special taste of Schnitzel. To be fair I have to say that I have just tasted the Schnitzel and nothing elseexcept the salad which was good.

    RATHSKELLER

The Rathskeller is the restaurant and beer pub in the HISTORIC Athenaeum -- a former German club in Indianapolis. The beers are very good but a bit expensive for Indy but the keep good entertainment coming to the area. This also has the best outside beer garden in Indianapolis.

    Favorite Dish: Baked Brie ($9.50)
Rich and flavorful imported brie topped with buttered toasted almonds served with apples, grapes, and fresh breads.
I just love to munch on this while sipping a good German beer.

AND where else can you get THESE side dishes...

I don't eat there, cuz despite my Bohemian lineage, I have a strict rule about not eating anything that ends in "wust" or "kraut". But for those who like that kind of thing, I hear it's excellent German food. I've only been of the Biergarten, which can be wildly entertaining after a few imports, esp. when the Polka Boys get going. It's a nice change of pace.

Favorite Dish: Gotta try the German imports in the Biergarten.
