At Home...In the Village Shop: Ever Shop for Furniture in a Church?

    Interior of At Home in
    the Village Shop
    by deecat
While in Zionsville, Jill and I noticed a beautiful old church and wandered over to check it out. Much to our surprise, it was not not a church at all!. Rather, it was a renovated church turned into an upscale home furnishing and antique store. It is called At Home...In the Village, and what a shop it is. If I were a rich woman, this is where I would shop.

Dion Deason and Suzanne Nowland-Deason own the shop, but they were not there the day we came in. The young woman who was in charge was quite helpful. She told us that the owners travel all over the world to select the very best and most unique items. It is obvious.

Downstairs (in what was the church basement), they display all their outdoor furnishings and garden items. I was in heaven.

If you ever get to Zionsville, Indiana, be sure to go to church At home...In the Village!

The shop sells remarkable, unique living, dining, bedroom, den, patio furnishings from all over the world. We were especially "taken" by the lovely lamps that we saw. We also gushed about several wooden chests. All of this was too overwhelmingly beautiful to describe in words.

You would pay about what is charged in an upscale furniture store; however, you would be purchasing quality, almost one-of-a-kind items.

Because of a wrong turn, Jill and I had another adventure and discovery. Jill tells in her own words what happened:

Jill and Dee's Adventure Trips reflect our interest. I, Jill, love quilts. By serendipity, we found one of Indianapolis' best quilt shops: Quilts Plus.
I knew that I would love the place when I walked in and saw a quilt that used some fabric that I had just bought over the internet.

The shop features reproduction, Thimbleberries, and vintage fabrics. The quilts on the walls use traditional quilt patterns (sometimes with a twist) in traditional colors.

The shop sells quilt kits as well as fabric. Their quilts are wonderfully machine quilted in the shop using traditional quilting designs.

The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. While we were there, a half dozen women on a quilting trip came in, and they were as impressed as I was. This is a must-see for any traditional quilter."

I, too, loved the shop. The quilts were beautiful, the materials unique, and the "extras" were something I found irresistable. I even purchased one of those extras, a stuffed lime-green frog with a pink checked collar whose name was Lily Mae Leap". For my daughter's baby shower, it was one of the gifts I gave to her because it matches the nursery perfectly.

Vintage Clothing in Broad Ripple: Atten: Vintage Clothing Shopaholics!

  • If you're into vintage clothing, there are three vintage clothing stores you must see in Indianapolis. They are next door to each other.

Broad Ripple Vintage-You can find some hidden treasures in this one. This store is very eclectic. Vintage T's, old school converse, leather jackets, jewelry, 1940's-present day clothing. Men, women, and a small amount of children's clothing. They just opened a vintage houseware store next door called Strange Days. It tends to draw a younger crowd.
    824 E. 64th

Red Rose-We have to give special props to the Red Rose, Indy's first vintage store. 1920s-70's dresses, sweaters, shoes, hats, etc. Men and women. Classy and knowledgeable staff.
    834 E. 64th

Another Time Vintage Fashions-This place makes me drool! Amazing dress collection. Hats, lingerie, sweaters, shoes, etc. Mostly women, some men stuff.
    828 E. 64th

All located in Broad Ripple Village. I believe all have great prices and selections.

  • This mall is the most expensive in all of Indianapolis. They have Saks 5th Ave., Bebe, PotteryBarn, Crate & barrel, etc.... Plus they have a bunch of small designer shops also. Of course they have great stuff, but boy is it pricy. If you are into this kind of thing, this is the place for you.

It is a mall, so they have everything that you could want from a mall.

A favorite game of my boyfriend and I, is to go to Saks and find the ugliest stuff and make the other guess the price. Last summer they were selling a pair of mens white jeans with embroidered life size pineapples all over the legs. First, i want to know who is wearing those in Indy and second is $1200 a good price for embroidered pineapples?

  • I am from Indiana and always drive an hour to get to the malls in Indianapolis. In my opinion, the best malls are Keystone Mall and Castleton Mall. Castleton is right down the road from Keystone, so it is easy to shop in both malls on one day. Keystone has Abercrombie, Express, Limited, Dolce, Arden B, Pottery Barn, and Saks. It is more of what you would consider a "high class" mall here in Indiana. Castleton is more middle class but has more practical, less expensive stores. It has Forever 21, Delia's, Von Maur, Ayres, Charlotte Russe, Wet Seal, Express, Bath and Body, etc.

I always just shop for clothes, but there are also good stores to find good furniture and housing supplies.

    Keystone: more expensive
    Castleton: middle class

I love this place! They are a great place to shop not only because of the cool stuff that they sell but all of the things that they sell are imported from poor countries to help artisans make a living. They are a free trade company. I like that they are trying to support these artisans because it gives them a way to keep working and they hopefully won't lose their cultural crafts. Since many people give up being artists and move in to cities to get jobs, they believe that these arts & crafts can be lost. If you go in there the staff is nice and will talk to you about what they are doing and will give you plenty of information about free trade!

They are located at 2 locations: Mass Ave. and 86th & Ditch (indianapolis)

All things are unique, so whatever you like is a great buy!

You can get cheap things and really expensive things. I think it ranges according to what you want.
