The Indianapolis Zoo opened in White River State Park in 1988. The 64-acre attraction is one of few new zoos in the world to be built from the ground up. Its state-of-the-art facilities include the world's second largest, fully enclosed, environmentally controlled dolphin pavilion and the state's largest aquarium.

The Indianapolis Zoo is the only facility in the United States to be accredited as a zoological park, botanical garden, and aquarium. This “cageless” zoo features nearly 4,000 animals and 6,000 plants in simulated natural habitats.

Since I have lived here in Indy, I make sure to visit the zoo each year. They have a really great deal happening there, a company from around the city sponsers an exhibit. Each summer there is a new exhibit or an exhibit that is redone. This year they redesigned the Oceans area. They created a shark petting area. There are 18 baby sharks that are in a 2ft' pool and they actually come close to allow people to touch them. I read on the website that they are taking out the forrest area and they are putting in a Koala exhibit. I am sure that will be a big attraction!

In the last 5 years EXHIBITS:
    1.Butterflies
    2.White Rhinos
    3.Elephants
    4.Dolphins
    5.Oceans
    6. Meerkats

    Elephants at the Zoo

Opening in 1964, the Indianapolis Zoo offers an array of exotic and domestic animals within its park. Consisting of different world regions and bioms including the forest, waters, deserts, plains, and the opportunity to touch and interact with animals inside the encounters biome.

Each of these are very unique and consist of their own specific breads. The forest biome involves animals such as kodiak bears, many bird types, tigers, lemurs and bald eagles. Waters include the under construction dolphin exhibit, sea lions, fish of many types and the amazing sea horse that is currently there. That was my favorite of the water.

In the desert biome you have many types of snakes, turtles and the likes. The plains was my overall favorite with lions, giraffes, ostriches, zebras, elephants and awesome rhinos.

Located in White River State Park, there is plenty to do even around the zoo area including the botanical gardens, but you could easily spend your entire day with the animals.

The Indianpolis zoo is a neat place to go, kids or not. It is clean, with plenty to do inside, though I'm not exactly a connaiseur of zoos. (doubt I spelled that right.) There is a cafeteria, playground and gift shop in addition to the animals.
