Guide a paddle boat. Jog. Stroll. Visit museums. See fountains. See a steam powered clock.

There are a host of things to do along this wonderful restored canal. My great-great grandfather formerly patrolled this area as a cop.

    White River Canal Walk

The newest and most romantic place in Indianapolis is the White River Canal Walk. Though the White River has obviously flowed through this great city for many and many years, Indianapolis just cleaned it up and made it into a two sided river walk (or jog if you go during the day). Making up a 10 and a 1/2 block area between 11th and Washington Streets, the canal walk was refurbushed for the citizens and visitors in 1996.

With gardens, fountains, and some of the best views of Indianapolis, the canal walk is a can't miss when visiting the city. Perfect at dusk for those romantically involved, and a great place for the family in the day when wanting to look at the Indianapolis landscape. There is no swimming though and rightfully so. The canal walk will take you to all of the major destinations in White River State Park like the Indiana State Museum, the Eiteljorg Museum, the NCAA Hall of Champions, and much much more. You can even rent bicycles for 1 or 2 or even 4 people. Make sure you hit the path with camera in hand.

Leisurely walk along the canal in Downtown Indy

Everyone that lives in downtown Indianapolis, or close to it walk along the canal often. It is part of the White River State Park in downtown Indy. Along the canal you can rent paddleboats, visit some of the museums that are conveniently located on the canal, or visit the Medal of Honor Memorial. It is beautifully lit at night and extrememly safe. Some of Indy's more expensive apartments are located on the canal too, so you will likely see many rollerbladers out on any given night. It is a relaxing (cheap) way to spend an evening and still get out of the house. And it seems to be a good "date" place.

This is one of the best places to hang out on a sunny day in Indy. You can people watch, ride paddle boats, ride bikes, walk, etc. Recently I've heard that you can ride in gondolas in the summer, which I haven't had the chance to do, but it sounds fun. Best of all.....It's FREE!

    The Canal

I couldn't believe how nice the Downtown Canal area was the last time I was down there! The city has put a lot of money and effort into fixing up the canal that runs through the center of the city. It's absolutely beautiful. And the new State Museum is right on the canal. There's even paddle boat rental, though I'd assume they're not available in winter, when the water's frozen over.

Wow. Indy's all done up purdy.

I've actually never been here, but found some information about it very recently! It looks wonderful... there's actually a state park (White River State Park) aassociated with it. Anyway, it looks like a great recreational path that offers a nice view of the city. I plan to visit here next time I'm in Indy!

I found this link that I thought was one of the best virtual tours of Indianapolis. It came from a Realtor website, but the photos are amazing. It covers a lot of the attractions.

The most beautiful place to visit in Indianapolis would have to be the Canal Walk. It's gorgeous with all of the flowers and waterfalls. It's located in downtown Indianapolis.
