LaPorte Things to Do

  • County Courthouse

This is the third courthouse on this site. Built in 1892-94 of Lake Superior Red Sandstone. Designed by Brenwood S. Tollan in the Richardsonian Romanesque Style. It features open-arched central tower, stained glass, window transoms, wood paneling and a gilded frieze. The tower has a 272 piece glass skylight with gargoyles. It's a National Register...

  • Farmer's Market

I place the Farmers Market as a thing to do since I don't tend to buy anything. I do like to mill around in the crowd and see what's in the local area. We were here on the first day of the 2014 season, so it was a small production. It was a mix 50/50 of produce and crafts. Some of the crafts were actually baked goods, with is different from produce...

  • Go Apple Picking

chicago is equidistant to both Indiana and Wisconsin so since apple season is here, might as well have some fun! Apple picking is an activity found at apple farms. Apple orchards may be opened to the public, allowing consumers to pick their own apples or purchase pre-picked apples. Although this is ultimately a method of purchasing apples, it is...

  • Octagonal barn

Marion Ridgeway, who raised imported Percheron and Clydesdale horses, built this eight sided barn in 1876. Each stall had an outside entrance and hay was dropped into the central area of the barn. Although the barn is on private property it is easily viewed and photographed from the Door Prairie Auto Museum.

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A friend and I walked in here because I liked the well preserved Neo-Classic facade. Plus the name is funny. We were the only ones without beer guts and I was the only person wearing a sweater.

    Dress Code: working class.

This was a new place for us. It's one-floor, adequate aisle and a friendly staff. Some furniture and larger items, but mostly smaller items. Average pricing - lots of stuff under $20.00.

Open daily 10-5. Sunday 12-5. It's a nice old building, well maintained with a wide variety of vendors, thus many choice and interest. I like the mezzanine and the central stairwell to the basement. It's an old department store, which was once a high end shop in town. The fixtures still show it. Buying local is the mantra of famous chefs around the world and here in the midwest, you can buy assorted local produce that are fresh, and mostly hormone free (for the meats like cattle or pork or chicken) and you can buy local stuff here and cook them when you go back to chicago if you are staying with friends.
