Merrillville Things to Do

  • Underground railroad house.

by sambarnett Updated Jan 8, 2003

This sturdy house, now surrounded by modern subdivisions, sits upon a hill, overlooking the Old Lincoln Highway, now 73rd Avenue.

The State Historical Sign outfront reads:
Henry D. Palmer, M.N. (1809 - 1877) located at this site in 1836. First physician in Lake County, he was also counselor to the pioneers for 40 years and member of the underground railroad aiding escaped slaves.

Note that the house is under private ownership, and from what I've heard they don't particularly care to have people milling about.

    Shrine of Christ's Passion

by Toughluck Written Oct 15, 2009

Located in St. John, about 5 miles (3.5 km) south on U.S. 41, this site is worth a trip if you're spending time in Merrillville. More people stay in Merrillville than St. John, so it's appropriate here. The Shrine is brand new in 2009. It's a life size creation of the last week of the Life of Jesus Christ. It spread along a half mile walk. You'll witness the events in this remarkable week in a way you've never done it before. Be party to the last supper. Stand there along the roadway as Jesus stumbles and falls under the weight of the cross. Watch as a soldier strips him of his clothes. Feel the agony of each nail as they're driven deep into the wood. You'll stand before the crucified body as one thief chides Jesus for not saving himself and is defended by the thief on his right. You'll even witness the resurrection.
