    The Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets mall located in downtown Michigan City (601 Wabash Street) has 120 stores. Some of the stores include Gap, Reebok, Pepperidge Farm, all at great prices. This outlet mall is probably the best attraction in town. In the picture notice the huge cooling tower of the NIPSCO power plant. The plant can be seen clearly from the outlet mall.

    The sass-talking bird was pretty cool, but getting a visit from fellow historian and VT member yooperprof was defintely the high point of my jaunts to Michigan City. The weather was perfect for winter and time was short, but I hope my tour of the Dunes was concise yet thorough. Such is the desire of those who serve Clio.

    Walking up to the aviary at the Washington Park Zoo and having this wiseguy sqwak, "Uh oh!" as I approached. The crowd had a good laugh.

    Where the state of Indiana meets Lake Michigan is where you will find Michigan City. This town, located just minutes off Interstate 94 and the Indiana Toll Road east of Chicago, is a typical American town. There is a nice outlet shopping mall here, restaurants, hotels, a few museums, a marina, a lighthouse, a small downtown, etc., but the most noticeable thing here is the NIPSCO (Northern Indiana Public Service Company) coal power plant marked by its tall smokestacks and cooling tower. It dominates the city's northern section. Unfortunately it doesn't make a pretty sight; and doesn't make a pretty sight near the lake.

    Michigan City can be an excellent base of operations to see northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan. Beaches and dunes spread north and west from Michigan City along the shores of Lake Michigan. Orchards and vineyards are within an hour or two of town. Festivals proliferate throughout the fall in this area. For details, try some of the neighboring towns:
