While Nashville has a certain small town charm and is nestled in the rolling hills of Southern Indiana, it could easily be called a tourist trap! You CAN find artists and craftspeople in this little town. And you can also find lots of trinkets from everywhere! If you come on a weekend in the Fall season you can certainly find MANY people. However, if you arrive by noon you should STILL find a free parking spot if you are willing to drive up and down streets for awhile.
Unique Suggestions: Visit the Art Gallery (two blocks East of the Main stoplight (center of town).
Look for little upstairs shops.
Walk the streets.

The whole town is a tourist trap (and I mean that literally) in October and early November. 'Trap' because it could easily require 2 hours to simply drive through Nashville at peak shopping season. My advice it to avoid the town altogether at this time of year.
