Blue Gate Restaurant: Amish "Family" Restaurant
Hope you're hungry!
Choose a family style dinner (where it's all you can eat chicken, pot roast, ham and all the fixins and they bring everyting out in bowls, for everyone at the table) or order right from the menu. The food was incredibly delicious, with some of the best stuffing I've ever had. We opted for the pot roast. Wonderfully juicy and perfectly prepared.
But, eat as much as you want, but save room for dessert. The pie selection is seemingly endless, and each as mouth watering as the next. My husband had blueberry, and I had a chocolate dream.
IMPORTANT to remember. They DO NOT offer assistance rolling you out to your vehicle if you eat too much!!! ENJOY!!
Essenhaus: In nearby Middlebury
Last visit August 2010
Whenever we make the 2 hour trek out to Shipshewana, we head over to Essenhaus in nearby Middlebury for their Amish family style lunch. We recently also had visited Zehnder's in Frankenmuth Michigan which is the same style of food, Essenhaus is SO much better!
After you are done with your meal, you can go next door to the bakery and bring home some of the delicious baked goods or my personal favorite, the sweet and sour dressing served at the restaurant. If you can still walk after eating all that food, there are also gift shops that are in walking distance from the restaurant and there's a hotel as well should you want to spend the night in the area.
Favorite Dish: Food in the main dining room is served family style for $16.95 per person, everyone gets fried chicken and you can add beef, steak or ham for an extra $1 and the meal comes with bread and Amish peanut butter or apple butter, side dishes of mashed potatoes, corn or green beans, salad (be sure to try the sweet and sour dressing), bread, egg noodles and stuffing. Lunch/dinner is then topped off with a piece of pie so save a little bit of room or you can also take it to go.
It's all you can eat except for the dessert. If you are not very hungry or are a light eater, there is another section of the restaurant where you can order off the menu.
Pizzeria Venturi: Wonderful Pizza!
I just ate at this new restaurant Pizzeria Venturi. I didn't even know it exists, but we just happened to walk past it on our way to the Pampered Pet Boutique on Morton Street. They have wonderful outdoor seating: a deck with gorgeous flowers, tables with umbrellas, and a lovely pond with a waterfall.
Favorite Dish: We decided to order the pesto pizza at the suggestion of our server. We added fresh local cherry tomatoes. It was the perfect combination of what summer has to offer: fresh basil, tomatoes, and fresh mozzarella.
