The Word of Life Mural, A.K.A. "Touchdown Jesus," is a famous landmark on the Notre Dame Campus. It is a huge mosaic of Jesus on the library building, facing the football field, with his arms raised, cheering on the Irish! It is visible from the field, so players can see Jesus cheering for the Irish! Don't forget to take a picture in front of...

One of the most beautiful college campuses, Notre Dame is filled with beautiful trails for walking around. There are many colorful trees and also two beautiful lakes: St. Joseph's and St. Mary's. Pick up a map online or at the Eck Visitors Center (next to the bookstore), or just walk where you would like.

  • Water Supply

Don't be surprised to find the South Bend area's water tasting a little funny, or tasting differently from the surrounding areas like Chicago, Michigan, or Ohio - where the taste is more normal. • Lines painted on the streets

For some reason, the city can't seem to decide where to paint lines on the streets to divide lanes. You can't always tell if a street is a four-lane or a wide two lane; sometimes the lines are painted and sometimes they aren't. You have to watch the locals carefully to find out where to drive.

South Bend What to Pack

  • by dzni Updated Oct 5, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Summer is hot and humid. Pack accordingly. Winters are frigid and there is NOT a lack of snow. They get perpetually dumped on here in north-central Indiana, thanks to nearby Lake Michigan and thus lake-effect weather.
