    Indianapolis International Airport

by traveldave Updated Jul 25, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Located southwest of downtown Indianapolis, Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is the only major airport in the State of Indiana. Other than some flights to Canada and the Caribbean, there are few direct international flights, so anyone coming from another country or continent would have to connect through a major international hub before continuing on to Indianapolis. Several major airlines serve most American cities, however.

Airlines serving Indianapolis International Airport: Air Canada Express, AirTran Airways, American Airlines, Comair, Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection, Frontier Airlines, Midwest Connect, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and US Airways.

Indiana Department of Transportation provides a website with a wealth of information useful to anyone driving in the state.

You can find maps of accidents, best routes, detours, weather-related conditions, construction schedules. There is information on the toll roads: toll costs, passes, restrictions.

There are links to other websites with highway information authorized by the DOT.

The IDOT website is not as easy to navigate as some other states but it has some good real-time features that make it useful to tourists motoring through the state.

See the Heart of Downtown By Horse Drawn Carriage

A great way to see Monument Circle and other parts of downtown is by horse drawn carriage. Carriages go for about $30 for a half hour and are very fun and romantic. One company I'm aware of is Yellow Rose Carriage.

There are only a few ways to get around Indiana. the best is probably by rental car, which gives you the most options. There is a bus system in Indianapolis called Indy Go, but I am not sure how extensive it , but if you are traveling on a budget then check out the bus system as an option. Of course their are always taxis, which can put quite a dent in the wallet.

There are several interstate highways crossing Indiana.Unfortunately they all seem to be under constuction constantly.
Indianapolis has an international airport and Evansville has a regional airport.
The only transportation I have used is by car or truck.

Fly! Fly! Fly! I flew up there each and every time for some pretty low costs too! From Florida you can fly non-stop to Indianapolis on Delta (Express), ATA, or if you have to fly on them, Southwest.
    Car by far.

Hmmm.... you could fly into Indy (Indianapolis) or drive in from one of the million expressways the cross the state. An interesting route would be to take the Wabash River upstream from the Ohio/Mississippi River or downstream from the middle of Ohio.
    Car.

    by Cactus140 Written Aug 25, 2002

Fly or drive, our airport is constantly improving, with most planes ontime. Amtrak also stops here.
Take a cab or a limo, if you are here for a large convention, use the shuttle busses, AVOID THE CITY BUS SYSTEM!!!!! It isn't on time very often, and the ride (especially late night) can be scarry.

  • They Call Indiana 'The...

by ChiBronco Written Aug 24, 2002

They Call Indiana 'The Crossroads of America' for a
reason. There are many Interstate highways here that
all seem to lead to Indianapolis, but every major city in
the state is on at least one Interstate.South Bend's
Airport is a combination Airport\Bus Station and is nice
for Flying into Northern Indiana but you have to get a
Flight first from Chicago or Detroit. The Indianapolis
Airport is a Major Hub for USAir and ATA and is never
    crowded.
I recommend Driving here and I think the only reason
to fly to Indiana is if you're on the East or West Coast
where flying is a must. With all the Major Interstates
here,There is no part of the Country that cant be reached
    from here.
