The earliest european incursions into the area were by the French. They used the Wabash River as a roadway to and from the Ohio River and the settlements just north of the junction of the Ohio & Mississippi Rivers. The French arrived were here from before 1717 when the Blockhouse was built. The fort grew as a point of contact between the French...

  • Purdue University

Let's face it. The only thing really in West Lafayette, aside from a few bars and a Wal-Mart, is Purdue. There's plenty to look at on campus, and it's pretty compact. Unlike IU, which houses a national forest between each building (sorry, hon). Go to the info center, pick up some, you know, info, and wander around.

  • Be a regular

This place gets crowded on game weekends and parent weekends. It's a great place to eat. The food is good and you always know the quality will be there. BBQ, omlets, waffles, burgers, pasta, whatever you order will be good. Well cooked, presented in a pleasant way and always warm.

  • Excellent Japanese

As authentic as you can get in the US. It's not a showy place, with the Habachi Grills in the middle of each table. It's more of a traditional Japanese place. The TV is running a Japanese Language program, (sounds off, but the Japanese sub-titles are running). Background music of popular songs are playing (in English), but at a more relaxing/quiet...

No trip to Purdue would be complete without a stop at Harry's. Cramped, dirty, smoky, loud - but we wouldn't have it any other way. • CityBus

CityBus is the main mode of transport around Purdue, seeing that they have a lot of Campus Loop services (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Ross Ade, South Campus) and a couple of others that run through campus (Tower Acres, Tippecanoe Mall, Salisbury, Purdue West/Klondike, Market Square, Wabash Trolley). If you really wanna get anywhere on time, either wait...

  • You COULD fly in, but it'd be...

You COULD fly in, but it'd be expensive. I think Northwest Metrolink is the only commercial line that flies into Purdue Airport. More than likely you'd fly into either Chicago or Indianapolis and drive. But you could also take Amtrak from either of those cities too. Greyhound has a stop as well.Car and bus... and taxi too. That's it.

West Lafayette Shopping

  • Purdue Spirit!

When you visit Purdue, you've got to visit the bookstore and get the gear! Support Purdue Spirit and wear the school colors! They even have Purdue T-shirts in your favorite colors here! Buy a banner or a bumper sticker! Be a Boilermaker! Look around... They have pretty good sales!

  • Cheap Souvenirs

You don't need to go to the bookstores to get Purdue tee shirts, mugs, postcards, whatever. You can get them at Discount Den on Chauncey Hill. Just be warned-this store has a lot of things that are not exactly "family friendly." And try to get your food somewhere else-they have groceries, but they are really expensive. Not bad, though, considering...

  • Books for book lovers...

Von's Books is the book lover's stop in West Lafayette. This isn't some textbook store that has about 10 t-shirts for every title they have in stock. At Von's expect books, and lots of them. They seem small compared to some places, but they don't front display a lot of books and, for the most part, they only carry one or two copies of any given...

West Lafayette Warnings and Dangers

  • beware the ice polishers!

here at Purdue University, where every which way you turn is against the wind, there's almost always snow. and with snow comes the Ice Polishers errr snow removers. the catch is, by the time the staff gets around to attempting to remove snow the snow is already packed from being walked on all day and thus the snow removers polish it into ice and...

  • Snow removal

Snow removal around campus doesn't just involve the removal of snow. No, our tuition dollars bought a fleet of Ice Polishers, which cleverly polish the underlying ice to a brilliant sheen, to the peril of anyone silly enough to try to walk to class on the sidewalk. Also, I had my car plowed in on numerous occasions.

Purdue students have a funny habit of rioting after basketball games, regardless of whether Purdue won or lost. I remember not being able to sleep because the police helicopters keps passing overhead and part of my dorm was evacuated because the tear gas was getting in the building. During the last riot, Tippecanoe County actually ran out of tear...

West Lafayette What to Pack

  • by dzni Updated Aug 26, 2002

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: I hate the midwest... :) Well, anyway, it can get really, really cold in the winters and the wind never seems to stop blowing. It gets pretty dry too. In the fall, expect cool weather and rain. Spring, same thing for the most part, but spring is much windier (thanks to the plains). Summer is hot and humid (ok, it's not THAT hot always, but it can be... generally stays around mid- to high- 80's). Oh, so, pick your clothes based on that. There are very few places where you'd have to dress up for, so keep that in mind when packing.

Miscellaneous: This doesn't look like much snow, does it? Hmmm... well, we do get our fair share at times... even if it is right before spring at times. Ok, this isn't exactly the UP of Michigan... it's not even Chicago! This is just typical midwestern snow!

  • What is a Boilermaker?

I have gotten plenty of questions on this, so I will answer it here - Purdue's mascot is the Boilermaker. A boilermaker works at a steel mill, railroad, shipyard, oil refinery, factory, etc., making and repairing boilers that supply steam for power. They also make and repair large vats and vessels that hold liquid or gas. (taken from...
