Take a nice walk near Wolf Lake --- there is a nice hiking trail which has some great views. Even the locals don't know about it!! Take 119th St. West until you hit the lake. The trail is on your left. Leave a Comment

One point of interest that is often overlooked is the winery in the Robertsdale section. Lake Michigan Winery Located on the Southeast corner of 119th St and Calumet Ave. (RT.41) They produce terrific selections of red & white wines. They also invite you to a wine tasting tour where you can sample several of their creations. It's a wonderful and pleasing experience. You must stop in. Leave a Comment

from the backside by sambarnett A true Whiting old-timer here. The Schrage family settled in the area in 1854, when Henry was 10 years old. A Civil War veteran who fought under William Tecumseh Sherman, he returned to Whiting, worked on the railroad, opened the town's first store, established its first Post Office and in 1895 established the Bank of Whiting, which is still in the family today although it's now known as Centier Bank. The house is now the rectory for nearby Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. Leave a Comment

Every year for Halloween, the Whiting Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) designs a spooky haunted house in Whiting Park. After years of intending to go but never getting around to it, I finally went this year with my husband, nephew and sister in law. I was expecting to laugh the whole way through since most haunted houses tend to be pretty lame but as we waited to go in, we saw a little girl who couldn't make it through with her fingernails buried deep into her dad's arm and lots of young kids running out of the exit, a sure sign we were in for a spooky time. It was actually pretty scary, lots of pitch black rooms, people lunging at you in the dark, strobe lights. I may even make this an annual Halloween ritual! Admission is $5, free parking. There is also a hayride for $2. Leave a Comment
