If you have ever driven across Iowa on I-80, you may have asked yourself, "Why?" It can get a bit monotonous but between Des Moines and Omaha, Nebraska there are several stops which could add a bit of appreciation for America to your day. If I could only suggest one, and you had time to spend a few hours, I would suggest that you stop in Winterset where you can learn all about John Wayne and you can visit many of the sites which are portrayed in the book and movie, "The Bridges of Madison County."
If you only have a few minutes or want to stretch your legs at something other than the typical Interstate rest stop, take Exit 86 from I-80 and go south about one mile. On your right you will see Iowa's Freedom Rock. At one time this rock was a graffiti rock like a lot of large rocks near highways where youngsters painted birthday greetings, pledges of their undying love, etc. About 10 years ago a young man named Ray (Bubba) Sorensen, having decided that patriotism was at a low point in America, decided to do something to change that. Thus was born the Freedom Rock which he repaints several times each year with patriotically themed paintings.
