Amana Colony Art Gallery: Iowa Artwork

by atufft Written Jul 30, 2013

Amana has more than one fine gallery with locally produced arts and crafts for sale. I'm very fond of the midwest artwork, that's all I'm gonna say. Browse for yourself. Just through the old wood houses where they are on display is worthwhile.

Various Antique Shops: Vintage Oak Furniture and Antique Collectibles

The commune is gone, but the buildings are inhabited by shop keepers, many of whom stock fine collectibles and refinished antique oak furniture. I bought one and put into the back of my big trailer along with the commercial load of Iowa pork I had picked up near Waterloo.

Various Amana Shops: Quilts and Textiles

    Amana Textile and Quilting Shop

One of the best things to do is let yourself browse the textiles at the various shops in Amana. This is pure Iowa at it's best. Don't expect bargain prices though. Very few of the textiles are actually made in Amana now, but in the past this was it!

Art Oasis: Interesting local artists' gallery

by yooperprof Written Sep 4, 2006

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

you can't judge a gallery by its curb appeal

Nice gallery that showcases the work of regional artists - many of whom teach or practice in nearby Iowa City/Cedar Rapids, but who keep their connections with this special place. The Oasis has a wide variety of arts and crafts, pottery, painting, sculpture, and non-traditional pieces as well.

Notice the very plain, unadorned exterior of the gallery. That's the real Amana spirit there!

The Herb Lady & Co.: Spices, honeys and teas

run by Amish-spice of the Spice Girls?

If it's light and natural and organic, the Herb Lady probably has it in stock. It's a good place to get all your favorite Burt's Beeswax products, and also a year's supply of organic nutmeg for all your baking needs.

I'd like to give you more details about these shops, but we arrived late in the day, hadn't planned to stop and found a magical place that we'll have to come back to.
