    El Azteca: Decent Mexican Food

by Basaic Updated Oct 29, 2013
    El Azteca

$11 as of August 2013. This restaurant looked pretty good inside and out with dark wood and bright colors. I ordered the Enchiladas Supremas (4 enchiladas; one beef, one chicken, one bean and one cheese) which was above average. Service was good and efficient but too mechanical and not that friendly. They did not make me feel welcome. Hours are 10 AM to 10 PM Sunday through Friday and 5 PM to 10 PM on Saturday.

  • Black Market Pizza: This Ain't No Ordinary Pizza (their words)

    by miniwheats7 Written Jan 9, 2013

We first saw this place on Man Vs. Food (yes the show with Adam Richman!) and figured since we had lived in Ames for a few years and never heard of it, we should give it a try. Location is a little north of campus in the Somerset area. It was a nice quiet area, not highly trafficked like campustown or downtown. We actually drove past it the first time not seeing that it wasn't its own standing building, but under some apartments. We got parked and walked in, and to our surprise there were only a few tables full (though it was a tuesday). There was a man at the counter and as we looked slightly lost he gave us a big warm welcome and invited us up to the counter which is where we order. The menu starts off a bit overwhelming, but the man at the counter (who turned out to be the owner) broke it down for us. We placed our order found a seat, and in no time at all the pizza was out to us! After a bit the owner walked over to see how everything was, and gave us a little story of how the place came to be. Besides being a small joint and belly up, the food was fantastic, def going there again and again!

Favorite Dish: We got the bacon cheese burger pizza and the ruben like on man vs food, and they were so good i can't even put it into words. We also got a small chicago style which is deep dish and the crust is a corn meal one with lots, and i mean lots of cheese, then our toppings and they used tomatoes and herbs on top which fit it so well!

    Hickory Park!!!: Hickory Park!!!

    by kim83_50158 Updated Mar 24, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

It's a very family-oriented restaurant! On birthdays (customers), some of the waiters will come and sing to the guest...they even have their own special song for the occasion.
Being such a special place and all....people from all over (Iowans, students' families, etc etc) love eating at Hickory Park. And so you might have a wait occasionally, but no fear, you won't be waiting too long. Also once you order, your food comes pretty quickly. I should comment about the price. I didn't put price per person, because it very much depends on what one orders (like anywhere). Many are less than $10, a few more between $10 and $15. Good news is, that even a relatively small, cheap meal will definitely fill you up.

Favorite Dish: A 'Hickory' is basically a Hamburger Steak. And there are so many different varieties and combinations. My favorite is the pizza or the mozzarella and Pepperoni, but they also have Barbecue meats, sandwiches, and almost anything else your heart desires. Their desserts are just as wonderful-especially the Apple Crisp. They also have Sundaes, Malts, Floats, Sodas, and tons of other stuff.

  • Great Plains Sauce & Dough Co: Great Plains Sauce & Dough Co

THE BEST PIZZA IN THE WORLD. Dine in (small, not usually very crowded, honey jars on the tables), carry out, or delivery.

Favorite Dish: The pizza is expensive ($8 for a small) but two slices are more than enough to satisfy ANYONE. The pizza has lots of cheese and one can choose from many different types of crusts: White (thin or thick), Potato (Thin only), and Whole Wheat (thick or thin). I highly recommend the thick whole-wheat crust. Even my friends who don't like whole wheat love it. Great Plains does deliver, but make sure to ask for some honey (to put on the pizza crust) if you order that way.

    A couple:

New China on Lincoln Way. Your typical Chinese fare, but particularly well done.

Cafe Northwest on Duff. Distinctive atmosphere, creative dishes for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike.

Favorite Dish: New China: General Tso's Chicken.

Cafe Northwest: I'd have to go with the Cajun Chicken. Mmmm.
