It's a very family-oriented restaurant! On birthdays (customers), some of the waiters will come and sing to the guest...they even have their own special song for the occasion.
Being such a special place and all....people from all over (Iowans, students' families, etc etc) love eating at Hickory Park. And so you might have a wait occasionally, but no fear, you won't be waiting too long. Also once you order, your food comes pretty quickly. I should comment about the price. I didn't put price per person, because it very much depends on what one orders (like anywhere). Many are less than $10, a few more between $10 and $15. Good news is, that even a relatively small, cheap meal will definitely fill you up.
Favorite Dish: A 'Hickory' is basically a Hamburger Steak. And there are so many different varieties and combinations. My favorite is the pizza or the mozzarella and Pepperoni, but they also have Barbecue meats, sandwiches, and almost anything else your heart desires. Their desserts are just as wonderful-especially the Apple Crisp. They also have Sundaes, Malts, Floats, Sodas, and tons of other stuff.

THE BEST PIZZA IN THE WORLD. Dine in (small, not usually very crowded, honey jars on the tables), carry out, or delivery.
Favorite Dish: The pizza is expensive ($8 for a small) but two slices are more than enough to satisfy ANYONE. The pizza has lots of cheese and one can choose from many different types of crusts: White (thin or thick), Potato (Thin only), and Whole Wheat (thick or thin). I highly recommend the thick whole-wheat crust. Even my friends who don't like whole wheat love it. Great Plains does deliver, but make sure to ask for some honey (to put on the pizza crust) if you order that way.

A couple:
New China on Lincoln Way. Your typical Chinese fare, but particularly well done.
Cafe Northwest on Duff. Distinctive atmosphere, creative dishes for meat-eaters and vegetarians alike.
Favorite Dish: New China: General Tso's Chicken.
Cafe Northwest: I'd have to go with the Cajun Chicken. Mmmm.

Ames' nicest Mexican restaurant. Think Carlos O'Kelley's (notice the similarity in names?) minus the Disneyland atmosphere and the severely inflated prices.
