Bedford is a small town of about 1400 (down 14% since 2000) located along Iowa Highways 2 and 148 in Southwest Iowa. The town was founded in 1855 as "Grove" but changed its name to Bedford the next year. The name possibly came from a store owner and pony express rider from the area, or from a town called Bedford where early settlers left for Iowa. Bedford is the county seat for Taylor County. Taylor was named for former president Zachary Taylor. The Taylor County Courthouse designed by F. M. Ellis using the Romanesque Revival style of architecture and was completed in 1892. The Taylor County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
