Little King: Locals Favorite Sub Sandwiches!

by Jewelslover Written May 14, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This place has been around probably longer than I have. It's a local favorite and probably the best sub sandwich I've ever had! The Little King Special is the best.

The restaurant is primarily used by people working in downtown Cedar Rapids for lunch, so has limited hours of business:

    Monday through Friday 10:00am-2:30pm.

  • Bistro on First: Classy Art, Awesome Food

by mgarver Written Nov 1, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is one of the snazziest that Cedar Rapids has to offer. Located right along the river in downtown, the restaurant has an unassuming face. The bar is beautiful, dim, and cozy; perfect for small chat and intimate pre-dinner drinks. The main dining room features old brick walls, but has funky cutting edge lighting features for all the eclectic Matisse and Picasso style art.
If there is an unfavorable aspect to the restaurant, it is that the menu has remained unchanged in it's several years of business. Though some consider that a GOOD thing!

Favorite Dish: The entrees I have had are the mango citrus salmon and the pepper beef tenderloin, and both were flavorful. The chefs there have a great sense of flavor nuances and mix them well...definitely not your hum-drum-run of the mill meat and potatoes that are so prevalent in midwestern towns.
But the best are the creme brulees. Warm, creamy, and sweet, the crust is perfectly reminiscent of toasted marshmellows in its flavor, and of smooth hard candy in texture.

The Vernon Inn: Greek food, yes it's actually quite good

    by Michael_SFBA Written Oct 1, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

One of my favorite restaurants in Cedar Rapids. This place is run by a greek family and the food is authentic, at least by American standards. In any case, it's very tasty.

Favorite Dish: Saganaki, Mousaka, and a bottle of Naoussa.

    Carlos O'Kelly's: Mmmm Mexican!

by Jewelslover Updated May 15, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Whenever I'm in Cedar Rapids I have to eat at Carlos O'Kelly's. I'm a chip & salsa connoisseur and Carlos O'Kelly's has great chips & salsa. If you like yours chunky with lots of onions, tomatos and peppers you will love it!

We've never had a bad experience at Carlos O'Kelly's and we've eaten there many times. The wait staff is friendly and food is always served fast!

Favorite Dish: I love their enchiladas. The shredded beef and chicken are both great!

Bishop's Cafeteria: Bishop's Chocolate Ambrosia Pie Mmmmm

by Jewelslover Written May 14, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Bishop's is another one of those restaurants that's been around forever. I remember eating here as a little girl. They have everything from fried chicken to baked fish to swiss steak to ham, and all of the fixin's on the side, veggies, and rolls. But what they are really known for are their desserts, and if you love chocolate try the Chocolate Ambrosia pie.

Favorite Dish: The Chocolate Ambrosia pie has a graham cracker crust, has a thick, sort of whipped chocolate pudding layer on the bottom, then a thick whipped topping layer topped with chocolate shavings. You'll definately be back for this pie!

Cedar Brewing Company: Cedar Rapids' Brew Pub

by Jewelslover Updated May 15, 2005

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you like local brew pubs this is the place to go, they have the usual wheat's, ale's and stouts. There are usually limited time special beers as well. They even brew their own cream soda!

They have good food too. The regular bar and grill type items - salads, sandwichs, etc.

The atmosphere is that of a sports bar, there are lots of tv's to watch the game on. The restaurant is pretty new and looks nice inside and out.

Favorite Dish: The chicken fingers were good.

    Al and Irene's

This place is a little dive, open for lunch only. The food is fantastic and served with the food is a little bit of attitude. I once tried to order the mild sauce, was told I was a sissy and was going to get the hot sauce. A lot of fun and great food.

I really like the Tick Tock, near Daniels Park. It has a lot of atmosphere, and cool pictures on the walls. Also, I'm a big fan of Vitos on 42nd Street, good place to see some friends! Also, go to the Irish democrat.

  • CR Chophouse: New chef brings life to tired restaurant

by steaksavvy Written Mar 6, 2007

My wife and I used to be regular customers of Daniel Arthurs restaurant in Downtown Cedar Rapids. The food was world class, unlike anything else in the corridor. We were dissapointed to learn in late january that the Chef that made that restaurant what it was was no longer there. His name is Clint Goodman, and he was the Iowa chef ot the year in 2006. We later learned he is now at the CRchophouse. We have since gone there twice, and had an excellent experiance both times, including a thai inspired halibut feature that was truly one of a kind. If you get the chance, go try his food, no matter the palate, you wont be dissapointed.

Favorite Dish: Chefs features, great cuts of meat

Zindrick's: Old World Charm (and Carbohydrates!)

by yooperprof Updated Apr 4, 2011
    Potato dumplings AND Bread Dumplings!

Food Coma Central. Authentic Central European restaurant with hearty Bohemian specialities, just like the old country. Spaetzle and Goulash and more dumplings than you can shake a stick at. Pierogis at least as good as those in Hammond Indiana! Nothing nouveau, lite, or "heart-smart" here! Just good thick sauces, Iowa pork, real veal, and guaranteed "stick to your ribs" noodles. Carb-loading heaven.

    Stomach-pump not provided.

Brewed Awakenings: Smart Coffeehouse near Coe College

    Joe near Coe

Considerably Above Average java joint near Coe College and the main downtown strip. Interesting art on the walls, poetry in the bathrooms, and intelligent staff who know how to make a smiley with the cappacino foam.

  • CR Chophouse: Don't Go Here!!

    by foodcritic4 Written Oct 16, 2006

Terrible experience. Extremely overpriced for the quality of food and service. For a party of 8 it took the service 1 hour to get our food to us all. The food was warm when we received it. The sauces were congealed and cold. Between a party of 8 there was 1 beverage refilled. The food was ALL overdone. Spices run ramapant in all the dishes taking away from the actual flavor of the main attraction. The potatoes were saturated in grease all the way through. In general, out of a party of 8, 2 people were "ok" with their choices...everyone else was very dissapointed. The manager was rude and was not interested in hearing complaints. It took 45 minutes for the waitress to figure out our separate billing, finally the manager had to take over.
Overall the entire experience was very un-satisfying and I would not reccommend the restaurant to anyone.

Favorite Dish: The soda was not too bad...a lot of carbonation.
