Dow City also has a nice little park that offers some recreational activities, an old schoolhouse, an old jail, and has an old caboose from the Rock Island Railroad.

Dow City is a small town of just over 500 (up 2% since 2000) located along US Highway 30 (The Lincoln Highway) in Crawford County in West Central Iowa. Dow City was founded in 1869 and is named for one of its founders, Simon E. Dow. Arthur Bowring, rancher and politician whose ranch is a state historic park near Merriman, Nebraska was born here. For me, the highlight of visiting Dow City was the magnificent Dow House which was built in 1872 by one of the founders of the town and is open to the public. The Dow House is a two story 13 room home that has been restored to show how an upper class family lived in the 1870s, and includes a carriage house. The Dow House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is open 12 PM to 4 PM on Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for kids under 14.
