Of course, if farms interest you, there are plenty to be found here in Iowa (my second cousin's farm in this photo).

  • my fondest memory of iowa... well that would have to be when we were driving through, as i mentioned above, and stopped at a rest stop. next to the vending machines was a notice and a box. the notice said: if you have any questions or concerns regarding this vending machines, please fill out a card and drop it in the box.' below that it said, 'vending machines operated by the Iowa Blind Society'

now this poses several good questions.
one, what are blind people doing driving to rest stops to fill vending machines?

two, if you put a comment on the little card, how are they going to read it?

three, imagine the difficulties of refilling a vending machine when you can't see if it's empty in the first place... granted, it's not as difficult as the driving bit but still...

i took a picture of the sign... and i could have sworn i'd scanned it at one point. when i find it i'll put it up here.

  • find something to do. Went to Des Moines for a convention. Lots of flat land. A local resident took four of us on a tour of the Bridges of Madison County. Took pictures. Time to leave.

There was a great Chinese restaurant just across the street from our funky 'art deco' hotel (don't stay there). Great food. Also heard rave reviews for the Iowa Steakhouse.

  • meet the people. I find the people here to be very friendly and inviting. There is not much diversity, but still everyone is welcome. The Living History Farms are interesting, and there is always a neat bit of history behind every little town in Iowa. You just have to look for it sometimes.

My fondest memory of Iowa is when I knew that it was 'home'. I moved from Colorado, and after going on vacations I would actually find myself anxious to be home. I never thought that I would like it here, but have realized that it is an ideal location to raise a family.

  • When i am away from Iowa the thing that i
miss the most is all the farmland, the
    cornfields rippling in the wind,the
sunsets on the Mississippi river and the
fact that you can see forever into the
    sunset.It's so beautiful!

  • Find a place to have a steak dinner. Having traveled from coast to coast I have found that our pride in our locally grown beef is justified.

Growing up in the Upper Mississippi River Valley will always be the first thing that comes to mind when speaking of my native state.

While a farm state, Iowa is also a land between two rivers. Not just any rivers but two of the world's great flows. As a tandem the Mississippi and Missouri form the greatest drainage basin on the planet.

No trip to Iowa would be complete without taking in a strech of the Great River Road along it's eastern border.

  • Get off the beaten path and explore some of the back roads of Iowa. To see Iowa as it truely is you have to slow down and see some of the sights.
