If you're flying, the best place is probably to fly into either Cedar Rapids, the Quad Cities (Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, Rock Island), or Des Moines, which is somewhat of a drive. Driving, it's right off of I-80 Car... walking if you're downtown. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

There are buses that run around the downtown. There is the Cambus System which is for the college students, the city bus system of both Iowa City and Coralvile. These will take you to the areas frequented by students and to some areas away from the center of town. But most people have their own car. Their are also taxis but again they are not used by the factory workers or many local non students except for emergencies. That is why a parking garge was necessary for downtown. I'm a city bus driver for Iowa City Transit. Fares are 75 cents for adults, 50 cents for students K-12, no charge for under age 5. Seniors age 60 on up can ride for 35 cents in the middle of weekdays, in the evening, and all day Saturday. All buses are lift equipped for people using wheelchairs. Take the Mall bus to visit Plum Grove (Robert Lucas Home). Almost all buses go downtown to the Old Capitol Building. The Plaen View and Westwinds buses go past Carver Hawkeye Arena and Kinnick Stadium as well as University Hospital which is the largest teaching hospital in the country. Leave a Comment

Old Capitol Cab is my favorite taxi service ever. They have intelligent and interesting drivers and dispatchers that are very good at their job. They are never, ever closed. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor HomePhone: (319)354-7662

Looking out window today..... by jodssmile In winter, locals avoid cars with southern state license plates. They make an invisible circle away from them. Unfortunalty, we have been forced to drive on snow and ice half of each year. There are tricks to the trade. If you are not used to it, just slow down. If bad weather, don't go down big hill. Use common sense. I grew up on a busy big hill. We used to put chairs in the window to watch cars crash when bad winter storms came. We had a 24 car pileup one bad year with our car hit 3 times- that was parked off the street! Even the trucks go in the ditch if you don't get the hang of it. If you accidently go down bad hill and can't stop, dont panic. Bounce off curb over and over, if last dig effort, hit a mailbox@Hey, it works if you are going to crash harder at the bottom. Don't park your car on street or it may get hit. Not to mention those snow plows will bury it under heavy wet snow. In summer, no problems except just know about critters crossing roads.. In November and during deer mating season, deer may run across roads and highways(they are bigger than bambi!) Especially see deer when dusk, dawn, or when night and road not well traveled. Then may also see or hit those fat corn fed raccoons and opposums. Buses in day cheap and easy to get. Not to many taxi's, have to call one up. College kids use a free bus shuttle to all dorms and campuses-cambus. Leave a Comment Theme: Car/Motor Home

Okay, Iowa City loves their Iowa Hawkeye football games. Our stadium is 75 years old and finally they are giving the old girl a facelift this year. Seats are almost always sold out, unless really bad team we play that Saturaday! Call ahead or you may not get tickets. The students sit in the Hawk Nest-the spot they only show on ESPN. The great seats are gobbled up for years and eternity by those wealthy alumni who donate. Darn, I forgot to give my million today to get those 50 yard line tics! But go and anywhere you sit, you will get caught up in the crowd and action! Herky will get you off your feet and you'll find yourselve doing the I-O-W-A chant aross the whole stadium after each hometeam touchdown. Only problem with games is you need to walk a bit to get to stadium, usually find a parking structure and pay few bucks to park. There is a new train painted black and gold off of Coralville main drag, but is new 9/04 and they are working kinks out. Anyway, if you like sports, Iowa fans love their hawkeyes and we have fun! Downtown Iowa City by Etoile2B Iowa City has a great little downtown area near the Old Town mall that is paved with cobblestones. A lot of the bars, restaurants and shops in town are found here, along with the public library and a playground. Public art is featured prominently in this area and it's a great place to walk around and pass the day away. Leave a Comment

The U of Iowa provides a lot of entertainment. Last weekend ESPN's Gameday was in town for the Iowa Hawkeyes to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes. Contact the U of I to get more current info on sporting events, Hancher Auditorium etc. Leave a Comment

You can start with the Devonian Fossil Gorge located north of Iowa City. Here, if you are interested in fossils, you will find them in a washed out area below the Coralville Lake Spillway which was uncovered during the floods of 1993. See the link to check on directions and phone for further information. This struck the interest of many at the time as the movie "Jurassic Park" was making the rounds through the theaters at the time even though the Devonian period was just prior to the dinosaurs.
