The Iowa Arboretum near the town of Madrid offers 378 acres of woodlands and prairie along with a carefully cultivated 40 acres showcasing hundreds of sepcies of trees, shrubs, and flowers arranged into 18 plant collections. The arboretum has been referred to as a "Library of Living Plants" The site includes a greenhouse and a decent cacti display (although nothing like those in the Southwest). Begin your visit at the visitors center where yoy can get a map of the arboretum and the gift shop where you can buy seeds, souvenirs and get information about special plant sales. The park offers 4 hiking trails ranging from very east 1/4 mile strolls to still pretty easy trails with a bit of elevation change and/or steps to navigate. The grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset, the office is open 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
