Nevada (pronounced (Nuh-VAY-duh) is a town of about 6800 (up 1% since 2000) located just north of US Highway 30 (The Lincoln Highway) in Central Iowa, close to Ames and not that far north of Des Moines. Nevada was formed in 181853 as the county seat for Story County and was named for the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Please note that the town got its name a decade before the state. Nevada is still the county seat of Story County, even though nearby Ames has vastly outgrown Nevada. Story County was formed in 1846 and was named for Justice Joseph Story of the U. S. Supreme Court.
