Newton is a decent sized town of about 15,000 (down 3% since 2000) located along US Highway 6, just off Interstate 80, in Central Iowa about 30 miles east of Des Moines. Newton was established in 1850 and incorporated in 1857. Newton owed much of its early growth to coal mining and after the decline in the mining industry to Maytag. Newton is the county seat of Jasper County. Jasper County was organized in 1846 and was named for a hero of the Revolutionary War, Sergeant William Jasper. The current Jasper County Courthouse is the county’s third and was completed in 1911. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
