  • Best Mexican food in Iowa

Love the white cheese and they aren't afraid to use it. Love the veggie quesadillas, tacos, chicken nachos, and cheese dip.

  • Good Food Average Service in Missouri...

$13 as of August 2013. The Junction Cafe is located at a truck stop. The meatloaf was good with slightly above average portions; but the service was average at best. Come for the food not the service. Hours are 7 AM to 9 PM Sunday through Thursday and 7 AM to 10 PM Friday and Saturday.

  • Nice Chain Restaurant in Marshalltown

$22 as of August 2013. Applebee's advertises itself as a neighborhood type place and frequently it is. The food is good and the atmosphere semi-casual. You fit in here in a suit or in jeans. The Applebee's in Marshalltown was no different. My waitress was friendly and efficient and my food was very tasty. I also really liked the hostess. Her name...

  • Good Chinese Food in Grimes (Des Moines...

$11 as of August 2013. The name of the place is not real imaginative and since it is in a strip mall, there is not much in the way of decor outside, and not much more inside. What they do have, though is some very good Chinese food and a friendly staff. The hostess was an absolutely beautiful young woman, one of those exotic looking Asian dolls...

  • Good Chain Restaurant in Des Moines

$13 as of August 2013. Perkin's specializes in "comfort food" and baked goods (like great pies and cakes). The atmosphere tends to be casual and family oriented. This time I had some Cajun Tilapia, herbed rice, and steamed spinach. Everything was well-prepared and the portions were good. Perkins is open 24 hours a day.

  • Decent Mexican Food in Ames

$11 as of August 2013. This restaurant looked pretty good inside and out with dark wood and bright colors. I ordered the Enchiladas Supremas (4 enchiladas; one beef, one chicken, one bean and one cheese) which was above average. Service was good and efficient but too mechanical and not that friendly. They did not make me feel that welcome. Hours...

Northside Cafe was the location for Clint Eastwood to dine when he wasn't with Meryl Streep. This was the place where Eastwood found the town gossip. Jill and I decided to have dessert at Potter's Mill Restaurant in Bellevue. Actually, we were excited to see the inside of the mill.Elbridge Gerry Potter built his "Jasper Mills" in 1843. • Eating Family Style

Located in Main Amana, the Ox Yoke is a great dining experience. It's been open since 1940 and never disappoints. After being seated, you'll receive a basket of homemade bread while you decide what to order. When you order family style (I'm not sure why you would order anything else) you will receive (with your main dish) a heaping bowl of mashed...

  • Best margaritas in town

Very good bar, with competent friendly help and fun patrons. The food choices are Mexican and Italian and are very good. They have lots of specials so ask the waitstaff what to get, you'll be pleased. Everything is good, I like to get nachos with their special white cheese dip and the turkey gizzards on Sundays. I choose something different off...

  • A Real MidWest Original

I was going to say this is an Iowa institution but I've seen at least one restaurant outside of Iowa (it's in Galesburg, IL) so I guess Iowa doesn't have the exclusive rights to this. Maid-Rite's (or 'drites) certainly shouldn't be kept a secret. These sandwiches are delicious. Basically, what the sandwich consists of is beef that has been slowly...

  • A Great Picnic Idea

One of my favorite things to do when I visit Iowa is to go down to the Amanas and pick and choose my way around the colonies to make up the perfect picnic meal. Then I take all the fixings to the Lily Lake, pick out a place to sit down and have, what I think is, the best meal on the PLANET. The only catch is, you have to get up pretty early to do...

  • Coffee, Soup, Pizza, Sandwiches,...

After a fast-paced tour of historic downtown Main Street Dubuque, Jill and I were quite thirsty so we went to Cafe Manna Java. They advertise that they use only the finest natural ingredients, which was a plus as far as we were concerned. Not only is it a coffee/tea shop, but they also serve wood-fired oven pizzas, European breads, handcrafted...

My wife and I have lived in Des Moines for seven years and we love to eat out. There are so many options in Des Moines that we try to not eat in the same place twice (although we still do) Some of our favorites are El Azteca, Centro, Buzzard Bill's, and Cold Stone Creamery for Ice Cream.

  • My favorite restaurant

Tucked away in Montezuma (the county seat of Powsheik county) is the local treasure known as the Apple Basket. Run only by locals and only on the weekends, the Apple Basket pulls in a hefty amount of business. It's very traditional and reminds me of eating in Grandma's kitchen. My favorite foods at the Apple Basket in Montezuma are the steak,...

In Iowa you are sure to find some good midwestern homestyle cooking. There are some really good cafes and diners around Iowa that offer great meals at an inexpensive price. While there are also the usual American chains, take a chance on a local diner if you see it overflowing with people, it is very likely to be very good.
