Rock Rapids is a small town of about 2600 (up 1% since 2000) located at the intersection of US Highway 75 and Iowa Highway 9 in Northwest Iowa near the borders with South Dakota, Minnesota, and Nebraska. Like many places in this part of Iowa, Rock Rapids has a strong sense of their Dutch Heritage. Jerry Mathers (Leave it to Beaver) lived in Rock Rapids as a child prior to acheiving his fame. Rock Rapids is the county seat of Lyon County. The boundaries for Buncombe County were drawn up in 1851 before the land was actually obtained from the Sioux. The name was changed to Lyon County in 1862 after its namesake Nathaniel Lyon (a general who served in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War) was killed at the Battle of Wilson's Creek. The Lyon County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I really like the lions in front of the courthouse (photo 2).
