River Boat Casinos

by Jim_Eliason

Iowa was among the first states to allow riverboat gambling. Up and Down the Missippi the border of Iowa is dotted with these casinos. At first they were required to actually cruise, but since many have become boats in name only. Even if your aren't into gambling it can be a good place to get a cheap meal and to get a great view of the river.

Lake Okoboji

Iowa's largest lake. A destination full of resorts, attractions and Iowa's only old coney island style amusement park. A word of warning though due to the depth of the lake the water stays cold year round.

Bike on RAGBRAI (Register's [our statewide paper] Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa) It's a great time, a great big rolling party and a good old fashioned family fun time...All in one. 7 days, one state, a billion porkchops, and too many people to count. It's Iowa at it's best.

Visit any of the wine cellars around here. I'm not sure which one I visited, but there are several on the main throroughfare, 220th Trail, such as Ackerman Winery, Old Wine Cellar Winery, and Der Weinkeller. I believe all offer free samples, and some even offer unusual flavors, like Black Raspberry or Dandelion.

A very interesting place in Iowa is the Amana Colonies. In 1855, Germans seeking religious freedom settled in Eastern Iowa and formed a communal society. The area is beautiful, with rolling hills and lots of green space and the people are welcoming and engaging. The Colonies are famous for their wood furniture and I also recommend the wine and beer that is made there. The Amana Colonies are on the National Register of Historic Places.Great food and lots of it, fun shopping, interesting museums, and great B&Bs. We have stayed in the Die Heimat Country Inn Bed and Breakfast several times. The family that runs it are wonderful hosts, the breakfast is amazing, and the rooms are very nice. They are located in Homestead and the phone number is (888)613-5463. The Rawson's Inn is also wonderful and I believe it is right next door to the Die Heimat. The Rawson's number is (800)637-6035. My favorite city in Iowa is Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa (go Hawks!) and lots of fun things to do. There are some great restaurants. I can't remember the name, but there is a wonderful Indian restaurant downtown. In this same area are some fun shops and a cute little ice cream / coffee shop where the students hang out. Iowa City was the first capitol of Iowa and the old capitol building is open for tours. (Photo borrowed from the Iowa City website)

If you love 1800 history you should visit Living History Farms in Clive, they have recreated buildings, shops, homes, etc. They also have lots of historical infromation. If you like amusement parks you might enjoy Adventureland which is in Altoona. The little kids will enjoy it with all of their rides. They also have a circus. The campground and hotel are right next to the amusement park. If you like to learn about other cultures you will love going to the Amana Colonies, which tells about German descendants and their unique way of life.

There are several Major films that have been filmed at least partly in Iowa. Including: 'Twister'(the house at the end of the movie is in Eldora and is now a museum), 'Bridges of Madison County'(Southwest of DesMoines), and 'Field of Dreams'(Dyersville, near Dubuque, also a museum). This is the farmhouse that is featured at the end of the movie 'Twister'.
