Reliable Transportation

by BethStar83

If you are traveling in Iowa, always be sure that the vehicle you are driving is in working order and has gas. Getting stranded in the middle of nowhere is not a lot of fun. Of course, any Iowan would let you use their cell or house phone, but it could be quite a hike to find anyone. In case you might end up walking, always have a bottle of water in your car, so that the dry, continental weather does not dehydrate you.

Cedar Rapids

by DrewV

There's an odd smell in Cedar Rapids. I have no idea what it is, or why it's there. The town itself seems like a nice spot. It's got a cute little skyline along a nice little river (presumably with rapids). It's Iowa's second largest city, so I'm sure there are wonderful things to do.But the smell kinda drove me out.I have just been told that the Quaker Oats plant is the reason for the smell. That's good to know. So, fear not, America! Cedar Rapids sacrifices its nostrils so that we might eat oatmeal. Well done!

Of Crazy Drivers and Wild Animals

There aren´t many dangers in the country. People don´t lock their doors! Possible dangers: 1) getting into a car accident (ok, there are not many cars on the interstate, but some drivers really don´t know how to drive!) 2) hitting an animal on the interstate 3) getting bitten by an animal

Iowa City is the only place...

Iowa City is the only place where you can buy real beer of any sort in Iowa. Nebraska isn't going to be any better. I advise that you provision yourself adequately when driving past Iowa City on I-80. This must be especially terrifying to European travelers. If you look at my directions to The Sanctuary Restaurant, you will drive directly past a small store called John's Grocery, which has an ample selection of real beers (a few blocks south after you turn onto Gilbert St.).
