The Chaplin Nature Center is my favorite thing in the Arkansas City area. It is off highway 166 west of town a few miles. We had a wonderful time there. I'll include more photos from the nature center in a travelogue.

In 1893 the US government took 7 million acres of land away from the Cherokee and other indians and opened it up to settlement by farmers. Thousands of people came from all over the country and foreign countries to get this land. A race was held for all those people and they raced to try and be the first ones to reach the best pieces of land. The Cherokee Strip Museum tells about the land race. Arkansas City was one of the starting points for that race.
