Atwood is a town of about 1200 (down 6% since 2000) located at the intersection of US Highway 36 and Kansas Highway 25 in Northern Kansas. Atwood was founded in 1875 by T. A. Andrews and J. M. Matheny and named Attwood after Matheny’s son. Some time along the way the extra t was dropped and the town became Atwood. Atwood is the county seat of Rawlins County. The Rawlins County Courthouse was built by the Eisentraut, Colby and Pottenger Company and is a beautiful example of a Victorian style building. In front of the courthouse is a nice statue of a buffalo the mascot of the local high school. The county was named after General John Aaron Rawlins a Union General during the Civil War.
