El Dorado Things to Do

  • The Kansas Oil Museum tells...

The Kansas Oil Museum tells the history of El Dorado and the history of oil drilling. Lots of little towns in Kansas have history museums but this is one of the best one's I have been to. There is even a 4 acre park out side with an oil boom town, oil rigs, and tanks to teach you about the oil business. There are models of oil machines in side that...

One of the oil rigs at the Kansas Oil Museum that you can see up close. You can go in the buildings and see the big machines and look at the variations in drills and pumps. There is even a cannon. My guide brochure told me the cannon was used to shoot holes in oil tanks on fire so the oil would spill out before the tank could explode.

  • Coutts Memorial Museum of Art...

Coutts Memorial Museum of Art was established in this building on main street by an El Dorado attorney. I was not allowed to take photos in the building but let me tell you it is great. The museum is in an old bank building and seems more like a private collection than a museum. I am a fan of Frederic Remington and there are many works by him in...

  • My wife packed a diet lunch...

My wife packed a diet lunch for me with rabbit food when I was in Eldorado. I did not eat any place there. I went in to a store and asked some local folks where they would have lunch. They told me this place in the picture has good sandwiches. It is down town on Main street about a block from the art museum.

Night life... Eldorado is not a big city. They have a few bars and on Monday nights you can play BINGO here at the VFW.

  • El Dorado Dinner Theater is a...

El Dorado Dinner Theater is a good place to go in the evening when there is a performance. They have live shows, music, dancing, and good food. The theater was built during the towns booming oil days. It is very nice inside and seems too grand for a small town.

  • Don't Forget Insurance

If your current health insurance doesn't cover you while your abroad, you should consider getting international travel insurance just in case something should go wrong.

El Dorado Local Customs

  • This is the North Ward...

This is the North Ward Junction antique mall. It is in an old school building 5 blocks north of the court house. There are many antique stores in this area. I listed this as a cultural and not a shopping tip because visiting a place like this is almost like a history lesson.

  • I was killing time in El...

I was killing time in El Dorado and went to a flea market where lots of shoes were on sale for 25c a pair. I took a picture of them for my VT friend Imelda who collects shoes.

El Dorado Warnings and Dangers

  • Most Corrupt Little Town in America!

If you're visiting El Dorado, you're probably OK as long as you keep moving. El Dorado has an unstable city government at present, so it's probably best that you don't consider moving here until conditions improve. The photo should give you an idea of the kind of folks who run the town.

  • These 'low water' bridges are...

These 'low water' bridges are common on country roads in Kansas. If water is flowing over the top of the bridge don't try to cross it. You might make it but then again you might not.

  • The sign says not to drive in...

The sign says not to drive in to smoke on the highways. There was a bad accident and lots of people hurt when one car hit another that stopped in the smoke and then every car coming along plowed in to them in the blinding smoke. The black patch in the foreground is where the grass was burned. The prairies are burned in March and April to help the...

  • Instead of a picture of the...

Instead of a picture of the dam for El Dorado lake I took this picture of the flooded timber near the highway bridge. I see all kinds of birds in this area as I drive over the bridge including bald eagles. The lake is a nice place for picnics, boating, fishing, and BIRDWATCHING.

  • You can follow the signs for a...

You can follow the signs for a long drive out to the country to visit this spot. It is the first oil well in the area. There is not a lot to see except the historic marker and the 'nodding donkey' pump.

  • Rio Park has a BMX bike racing...

Rio Park has a BMX bike racing track. There are BMX races most weekends in warm weather. The great thing about this track is that the local youths who are involved in the races built and maintain the track. I went by to see it and four young men were working with shovels to build dirt jump ramps. Go and watch the bicycle races and give a round of...

Favorite thing: You don't have to visit this refinery but you certainly will see it when you are in El Dorado. During World War I this area produced nearly all the oil for the entire United States. In 1915 El Dorado was a town of only a few thousand. By 1920 when oil was discovered over 20,000 people lived here. El Dorado 'boomed' with oil just like Abilene or Dodge City boomed with cattle. Now the town has only 12,500 people living there.
