by brdwtchr Because the town is between two rivers there are good fishing spots if you know where to go. Near Soden's Grove bridge there are signs with fishing regulations written in three languages. That is because Emporia has a large Oriental and Hispanic population. The mix of cultures has caused some growing pains in the town but I think it has been good for the community. Leave a Comment

by brdwtchr Bluestem Farm and Ranch is some thing you should see if you have not been raised on a farm. I shop there at least once a week. There are things at Bluestem you never knew existed. Just prowl around the store and go down every aisle. You are bound to find some thing interesting. There is free coffee and hot tea in center of the store near the bulletin board where people post horses for sale and farm auction notices. Leave a Comment

by brdwtchr Dobbs School at north end of ESU campus is a restored one room school house. 30 years ago they tore it down carefully at it's original location and coded and number every stone and board. Then it was rebuilt on the campus. I watched them do it when I was a kid. It was quite a process. For a while you could still see the numbers written on the stones but they have all faded away now. by brdwtchr Early pioneers who founded the town knew they would need water. Emporia is located between two rivers. The Neosho and the Cottonwood. This is the Cottonwood river near Soden's Grove. There once was a mill here. The mill is gone now but a nice park is along the river. Leave a Comment

by brdwtchr Emporia has two driving ranges. There is a country club with golf course and a good municipal course south of town near the airport on highway 99. Par For The Course, the driving range across from the TRYSA soccer fields, is very nice. They have a proshop and a grill for hot dogs and hamburgers. Ask for the owner, Kyle Hickman, if you stop in there. Leave a Comment

by brdwtchr Emporia's leading citizen gave the land to the city for Peter Pan park. William Allen White gave this park to the children of Emporia after his own daughter died tragically. Mr. White's obituary for his daughter is engraved behind this statue of him near the lake at Peter Pan Park. Leave a Comment

by brdwtchr Every Spring the garden club in Emporia has a plant sale. Great plants at good prices. The money they raise is used to buy saplings trees to give the school children at Arbor Day. I always buy my tomatoes from them and as many flowers as I can afford. Leave a Comment

by brdwtchr Fremont Park on east 4th Street is not very big. There is an old train there and a gazebo. About once a week in Summer a group of musicians puts on a concert there in the evenings. Nice to lie on the grass on a blanket and listen to the music. I would advice you to take some thing to drink and some insect repellent with you. That will make it more enjoyable. Leave a Comment

by brdwtchr I grew up in this town and my parents often took us to Fox Granada movie theater. It is even fancier inside than it is on the outside. It had ornate ceilings and red velvet seats. For a while it was not used because a newer movie theater with 8 screens opened at the shopping mall. Now it is being restored. Leave a Comment

by brdwtchr I grew up in this town. The hatches on this tank are welded shut but when I was a boy they were not. My father, brother, and I would climb inside the tank and my father would explain how every thing worked to us. The old tank is at Soden's Grove now. Leave a Comment
