I am not certain if I would say Emporia has any must see activities. My favorite place to visit is the zoo. The zoo is small but is of a good quality. The zoo is also free. Last time we went to the zoo a 'docent' had a screech owl out to show visitors. She let me pet the owl.
Once each year the zoo has an Open House event. We went to it on June 24th, 2001 and I've added some photos of it in a travelogue.

Emporia Restaurants

  • Applebee's

It's a nice place to eat, a change of pace from the fast food restaurants. Plus, all the celebrity photos on the walls are good for passing the time. I always order the smothered chicken. It has cheese, green peppers and onions on it...good stuff. As for the drinks, a Blue Sky is the way to go!

  • Montana Mike's Steakhouse

The Montana Mike's restaurants are made to look like Mike's hunting lodge. It's just something you have to see for yourself. There are hand-carved bear statues greeting you when you enter the lodge. The hostess station is on Mike's porch. Hunting, fishing, etc. regalia is strewn around the restaurant. It's a real nice family atmosphere. They do...

We like to eat at Carlos O'Kelly's for the free chips and salsa. I like the fajita cheese crisp there. House of Ma has best eggrolls and fried rice I've ever had any place. Coach's has a pretty good Spinach and artichoke dip. Flying 'J' some times has a good steak for a special price. China Buffet as you can guess has chinese buffet and it does not...

Raccoons come out at night around Emporia. This one came up on my front step. It was not much afraid of our little poodle.

Bruff's is about a block east of Commercial street on 6th. There are a few bars and small taverns in Emporia but I like Bruffs because they serve steak sandwiches there. My wife and I some times have supper there.

On country roads out side of Emporia be prepared to do the country wave. When you pass a car or pickup truck going the other direction give a slight nod and while keeping your palm on the steering wheel open your fingers and give a waving gesture with your fingers. They will wave back to you almost every time. The only ones who don't wave are city people and tourists. You don't want to be mistaken for one of those folks do you?

Emporia Warnings and Dangers

  • No need to fear the water....

No need to fear the water. Emporia has one of the most modern water treatment plants in Kansas. In this picture beyond the settling pools you can see a new tower that purifies water by using ozone.

I knew a fellow who got killed because he did not slow down and look for trains at a crossing. The railroad tracks gp right through town. The railroad helped Emporia to grow. Be careful when you are driving and come up on a crossing.

Coming in to Emporia from the west on highway 50 there is a place where the speed is reduced. You will go under a highway bridge at the point where the slower speed begins. Be certain to slow down or you may get a ticket. The highway patrol often waits on other side of the bridge where they can not be seen.

Near the corner of 15th street and Graphic Arts on west side of Emporia is this old silo painted to look like a Coca Cola can. Near the highway west of town there is another one painted to look like a Coors beer can.

On the country roads around Emporia don't be surpised if you see deer like the one that came to drink at my pond. I like to take my binoculars and drive around looking for different kinds of birds using my truck as a mobile bird blind.

eat at Montana Mike's. If not for the great food, then for the atmosphere. When the wind blows just right, the air smells like the Dolly Madison factory just a few blocks down. I just moved to Emporia, so I don't have a lot of memories yet. The mall is small, but it's a nice mall. Just a few of the stores are: JC Penney, Claire's, Maurices,...
