    Coming in to Emporia from the west on highway 50 there is a place where the speed is reduced. You will go under a highway bridge at the point where the slower speed begins. Be certain to slow down or you may get a ticket. The highway patrol often waits on other side of the bridge where they can not be seen.

    You will see big sirens...

    • You will see big sirens mounted on tall poles. The tornado sirens go off every Wednesday at 10:00am. It is not a tornado at that time they are only testing the system. If you hear the sirens any other time ask some one where to take shelter.

    I knew a fellow who got killed because he did not slow down and look for trains at a crossing. The railroad tracks gp right through town. The railroad helped Emporia to grow. Be careful when you are driving and come up on a crossing.

    No need to fear the water. Emporia has one of the most modern water treatment plants in Kansas. In this picture beyond the settling pools you can see a new tower that purifies water by using ozone.
