So the Mexican food is slightly Americanized - but that is the way I like it. The atmosphere is very nice for a nice, more formal dinner, but it is not so formal that you cannot come in with jeans and a t shirt. It's become a tradition to go every year on my birthday - birthdays call for getting a picture taken wearing the sombrero and free fried ice cream!
Favorite Dish: Everything from the Mexican dishes to the American chicken strips is great! I am partial to the Hombre, myself.
If you're hungry, best hit Montana Mike's Steakhouse, 3216 Vine. The best steakhouse in the city, or in the area, period. Mike's offers up huge portions of steak, ribs, kabobs, chicken, hamburgers, salads, even shrimp. One of the most popular dishes is the steak and shrimp. With each entree, you get your choice of potato, a salad and a dinner roll (delicious rolls...made from scratch).
Delicious appetizers: cheese fries, potato boats, onion rings, fried mushrooms, fried zucchini.
Ordering a salad is a meal within itself: Steak or chicken salad, chicken tostado salad, chicken fettucine alfredo, Italiano chicken pasta.
The belly-bustin sandwiches are almost too much for one person: Mike's Big Beefy Burger is a monstrous one pound of beef! And it comes with a pile of fries, as do all the sandwiches, including a hickory burger, Roadhouse chicken (featuring sauteed peppers and onions...to die for!) and a chicken fried steak sandwich.
They also serve wine by the bottle or glass and filet mignon.
The desserts...better bring a friend for this one: one pound of rich chocolate or creamy carrot cake, and white chocolate cheesecake. This is one way to succeed with death by chocolate!
The decor is reminiscent of a hunting lodge motif...a wood-carved bear greets you as you enter the establishment. They're currently remodeling and putting a bar in where the hostess stand once was. It's the usual...taxidermied animals, skins on the wall, paintings, etc. Nice place, really.
The staff is very friendly, very accommodating.
The price depends on what you order...If you order alcoholic beverages, then you'll pay a little more for your meal. But the usual price per person is about $10-15, including beverages, in the evening. Unless you opt for a salad or a sandwich...then it's considerably less.
Favorite Dish: Right now it's the Mountain Top Chopped Sirloin...chopped sirloin topped with mushrooms (but I always have them hold the 'shrooms), bacon bits, Jack/Cheddar cheese and special sauce. It's so tender...melts in your mouth. You have your choice of sides: green beans, cinnamon apple slices, baked potato, mashed potatoes, sweet potato, french fries, steamed veggies. It's all good. You also get a salad and a delicous dinner roll.
China Garden on Vine St. is the best with some of the best Chinese food I've ever had. Even better than what I've had in San Francisco or Los Angeles. It is run by a super nice Chinese family that have lived here for a long time.
Favorite Dish: The Schezhuan Pork is my favorite. I've ordered it so many times the waitress already knows what I want before I order! Any of the Sweet and Sour dishes are good too, and the Won Ton soup is the greatest!
