AS IN ANY SMALL TOWN, you can get a measure of the town's pulse by visiting the downtown area. Unfortunately this town's pulse is not beating very fast, gauging by the looks of the downtown area. It does need some sprucing up, although I've certainly seen worse. Perhaps there just is not sufficient population to support many businesses there.
On the plus side, the Sunflower Patch store looks very nice (see photos), there were a few trees planted at one end of the median (They need to plant more!) and apparently a new gasoline station was being built (see photos).
THE DYCK ARBORETUM OF THE PLAINS is located in Hesston, Kansas. Here are displayed many interesting varieties of trees. It is a very relaxing place to visit.
A very nice green campus with modern buildings, shade trees, etc. We were there in July and apparently they have no summer session as it was a ghost town, so to speak.

Probably the only place in Hesston to eat, just as well the food is second to none, be it a steak, a sandwich or just salad.
Favorite Dish: Any of the Daily specials
Excellent value for money but mind out for the walking frames. The dining area also overlooks a pictorial view of Vista Lake.
Favorite Dish: The Lunch Buffet (all you can eat)

At Dyck Arboretum of the Plains you can see the different needle textures of various kinds of conifers. I apologize for this bad photo. The light was not good when we were in Hesston.
