When you go to most museums there are signs that say, 'Please Don't Touch'. At the Nature Center they have signs that say, 'PLEASE TOUCH!!!' It is true that you can touch all kinds of animals fur or look at a snake skin under a magnifying lens. You can see how hard the horns of an antelope are or how soft are the feathers of a hawk. Go there and touch and explore and learn about nature. Leave a Comment Directions: Highway 77 and 57 both go toward Milford lake NW of Junction City. Go to the dam that holds back the lake. The Milford Nature Center is below the dam.Other Contact: It is next to the fish hatchery.

The fort dates back to 1852 when the Army needed to protect the settlers in the area and set up a string of forts to protect those who were traveling out west along the famed trails routes. It was a strong point during the Civil War and many noted Generals came through here before and after the war.

He really did not live in this specific home, but a similar one. This home was restored along with many others along the traditional old street where officers and gentry lived. The homes are from the original times when built in 1855 from local limestone, and withstood the weather well. Custer had left wife Libby to attend to the house duties but there also was a servant most of the time to assist. His brother, Tom stayed with them for a while during the Indian campaigns out west.
Furnishing of this home was from donated items of the period, and a few pieces that were in the Custer family, like the piano for one.

This is a very well presented museum of the evolution of the Cavalry that housed itself in this fort. It had many famed people and names to attach to the adventures of the cavalry, with Custer being only one of many. There are a number of valued art pieces on display, also. There is also an adjacent 1st Division Museum that is worth the visit, a proud Big Red One that has seen many hard fought battles.

There are a number-about 10 old homes that are still occupied today and the officers and family live life every day in them. It is a pleasure to see these old structures still remain on the outside as they were in 1852 when built
