Favorite thing: You must visit the Plaza Area for its restaurants and shopping. You must also visit the Wesport Area for its restaurants, cafés and clubs. There is a beautiful Train Station as well. Overall a very nice Midwestern Big City. This Picture is the same as the night view from my hotel room. However, it is the daytime view on March 11, 2002.
It was a long time ago but I found the Plaza area facinating with it's reproduction cowboy saloons. I thought the 'fort' in the middle was a little odd as it looked as though it had been transplanted from Mexico. The best view was at night from a hotel across the river that had a glass lift on the outside giving a lovely view of all the pretty lights. Of course this is all so long ago now that I expect everything has changed.
Fondest memory: Whilst I was there, a friend of a friend took me for a drive round the 'old' part of town and I remember lots of 'antibellum' type houses, probably only 2-3 bedroom size and mostly built in the 1920's. My host was stunned when I said I lived in a house built in 1915 and that it was considered young!
Favorite thing: There is something of a joke about Kansas, that when you are passing through you MUST drive through quickly to avert the boredom that might ensue. However, if you happen upon Kansas City, Kansas (one of the larger cities in both Kansas and Missouri), there is reason to stop for a while and take in the surroundings. I have heard that it is a great, economical and safe place to live. Not to mention that the University of Missouri, Kansas City has an excellerated medical school program that effectively combines college and medical school-- but you must be very focused and very exceptional at a high school age to gain admittance. (I would NOT have qualified!)
Favorite thing: We go to Kansas City several times a year. We've driven there for the Renaissance festival, to shop, to eat, to go to an antique toy show, to visit a Japanese Festival at UMKC, to see the travelling Smithsonian Institute exhibit, and just to have fun. I'll be making more trips to Kansas City so this page will be under reconstruction from time to time.
The plaza (especially during the holiday season/all the building are covered in lights.)
Fondest memory: I love the plaza lights during the holiday season. I would go every year as a young child and climb to the roof of a large building where I could look out across all the lights.
