Joe Schmo's: Joe Schmo-No Schmooze Here

by BruceDunning Written Apr 12, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This place seems to bring out the lower element of drinkers-No real special things about the inside, but it seemed dirty and smelled like a toilet. Drink specials advertised on a chalkboard sign was from 2 weeks prior and they do not try to erase the ad for $2 beers.

Bullwinkle's: Local Close by college hang out

by BruceDunning Written Apr 12, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This seemed to be the closest place for students to walk over and get a beer. I think it gests packed in hot summer nights. This was at 1PM midday and ready for action already. It looks like it has a lot of ambiance.

Free State-But Charge for beers: This is the "in"place now

by BruceDunning Written Apr 11, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This has its own brewery and the students flock to come here now. They have quircky names like Flying Bison Rye, Black Angus; guess they are beers? It is decorated inside with paintings on the brick. The brewer is 1750 gallons, so it lasts the day.

The Granada: Nightclub with a big dancefloor

by yooperprof Written Jul 12, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The Granada (on Massachusetts) is a theater-turned-nightspot that features live music and djs. It's been "happening" here for a while.

Back in the days when I was a "clubber wannabe," I occasionally used to sneak over to Lawrence and come here. Oh that was a while back -- 1957? It's all very hazy. . .

for the clubber in all of us

  • The Jazzhaus: Excellent Jazz Spot

by polrbear Updated Sep 17, 2003

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

One of the best live music spots in Lawrence. Also one of the only spots where you won't be overwhelmed by the greek crowd on the weekends. When you get tired of all the airhead sorority girls, wander down here and find the intellectual girl of your dreams. To truly enjoy yourself, you better not have any allergies to cigarette smoke.

  • Replay Lounge: A good place for gigs

    by jayhawk2000 Updated Sep 14, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is a real kick-ass kind of place for smaller gigs, featuring the likes of Wasted Stacey, Filthy Jim, Floyd the Barber and Arthur Dodge. These are bands, by the way, not local characters who hang out here.

And if there are no gigs on, you can always play on their pinball machines, they've got about a half dozen, while sipping a Mint Julep.

Yes, it's a pinball arcade that hosts bands and serves cocktails...the kind of thing you can only find in Lawrence!

Other places for music in town (with more info coming soon) include the Jazzhaus at 926 1/2 Mass and the Bottleneck at 737 New Hampshire.

  • The Wheel: Full of tradition and 18 year olds

by polrbear Written Oct 17, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This bar is an institution at the University of Kansas. Not only is it just down the hill on 14th street, but 18 year olds with bad fake IDs have been cramming the place for decades. After football games you get a lot of alumni coming in to relive some of their drunken moments at KU. Overall, it's somewhere every KU student should go once, but there are better places to be.

  • The Sandbar: Jimmy Buffett lives

by polrbear Written Oct 17, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This place is rather small, but is completely dedicated to Florida and Jimmy Buffett. There ain't much more than him in the jukebox. The best thing is that late night some girls decide to get up and dance on the bar after they've had too many. But can you really respect somebody who feels moved by "Cheeseburger in Paradise"?

  • Quinton's Bar and Deli: Frat heaven

by polrbear Written Oct 17, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is a great lunch spot and at night has a pretty good collection of under 22's from the greek houses. Many beautiful people living off Mommy and Daddy. Lots of style, but lacking in substance. Lunches are really good though - try the soup and half-sandwich (the Jayhawker).

  • The Bourgeois Pig: Preferred spot of Capitalist Scum

by polrbear Written Oct 17, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This cozy little spot is a fantastic place to while the evening hours away. Not only do they make fantastic coffee and java drinks, but they have cigars and an extensive selection of liquor and apertifs. Kick back at a small table with your Macanudo and a Scotch and Soda and reflect on your position within the class struggle. FIVE STARS!

  • The Outhouse: Landmark turned juice bar

by polrbear Written Oct 17, 2002

Apparently this is now a BYOB strip club, but in the early 90's it was a tiny little shack on the edge of town that hosted the cutting edge of punk and hard alternative rock. Ice-T and Bodycount once played here. I just can't believe they couldn't leave the legend alone...

  • Louise's downtown: Bar #1 that I'm banned from

by polrbear Written Oct 17, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Downtown bar that is pretty decent with both a first floor bar and one upstairs. After an ice-throwing incident in 1997, I don't believe I'm very welcome here anymore. I won't go into much detail, but the bartender was ignoring me and a pretty girl who was getting thirsty. How can you be gallant when there's no help around to get the drink? Suffice it to say I had a few to drink before this point.

  • The Hawk: One of the 14th street Holy Trinity

by polrbear Written Oct 17, 2002

Briefly known as the 18th Amendment, this bar is just down the hill from the campus on 14th street and is packed on the weekends. They've got a few pool tables and lots of beer, which is a good combination in my book. Met a future NFL Defensive Back in this club once and shot the sh*t with him for a few hours.

  • Granada: former theater turned nightclub

by polrbear Written Oct 17, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This building used to be a theater downtown, but like most old-style theaters it went out of business. Mid-90s it was turned into a dance club/live music venue. Best memory ever was wandering in late one evening and bumping into a goth vampire chick who confessed to liking to suck blood and watching her ignore her dress-wearing male companion while we went dancing for a few hours.

  • Johnny's Tavern: Bar across the bridge

by polrbear Written Oct 17, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This place is technically a biker bar, but serves big burgers for lunch and hosts the college crowd in the evenings. It's about the only decent bar in the North side of the town, but be careful stumbling home. At least one student has gone missing after wandering too close to the river.
