Seventeen houses have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The greatest concentration can be found between 6th and 8th streets, in the blocks west of Tennessee and east of Indiana streets. The entire neighborhood has been designated a national historic district. The local tourist office can provide you with a free map and guide, while the Spencer Museum of Art published an excellent booklet featuring about five dozen of Lawrence's finest homes. It's entitled '19th Century Houses in Lawrence, Kansas' by Katie Armitage and John Lee with a cover price of $8.95. You might be able to buy it from Amazon but will have more luck tracking it down at a local bookshop when visiting Lawrence. Downtown is a beehive of activity with a wide variety of restaurants and shops. Few midwestern towns of any size can boast of a dowtown business district as alive and vital as Lawrence. A few national chains (such as GAP) that are normally found only in Malls call tree-lined Massachusetts Street home. Besides the shopping, you will find an array of restaurants ranging from elegant to brew pubs to ice cream shoppes, live theatre, street art and musicians, and a museum. Kansas Jayhawk football is played in Memorial Stadium on the campus of the university. Gameday Saturday afternoons in the fall are a colorful spectacle. The stadium sits in a beautiful, natural bowl setting. From your seat in the stadium, you look up at the campus skyline on the hills in front of you - especially breathtaking when the tree leaves have turned to their autumn colors. KU has had some good football teams in the past, and some outstanding players. However, their successes in recent years have been fewer than we Jayhawk fans would like.

Spencer Museum of Art on the KU campus is very interesting. They have a great many different types of art on display. They had works by featured female artists, contemporary Cuban art, and rennaisance works just to name a few varieties of the work display there. I'll go ahead and admit that when I looked at some of the contemporary art in the museum I did not understand the artist's message from every single piece. Some of the time I could tell at a glance what was being conveyed. It became a challenge between my wife and I to figure out what each piece was trying to convey first. Thinking about each piece and then thinking about what it meant when the meaning sank in was quite interesting. Leave a Comment Directions: KU campus again, down the hill from Dyche Hall. I suggest you use the visitor parking near the stadium and take the short walk up the hill.Other Contact: Admission is free but donations

Visit the campus at the University of Kansas. Besides strolling tree-lined Jayhawk Boulevard atop Mount Oread, visit the anthropology museum, the natural science museum, and above all, the university's art museum located down the hill from the student union. Architect Frank Loyd White, during his visit to the campus, remarked that KU was situated on the most beautiful site for a college that he had seen. He did not then, or would not now, approve of all of the buildings, but that does not detract from the allure of the setting.

One of the exhibits in the art museum. It was not my favorite one but it was one I could photograph easily because it was not under glass. You will see over 4000 years of history in art represented in the museum so enjoy it all. Leave a Comment
