McPherson lake is near the game refuge. Drive around the lake and you will find this nature trail. The nature trail is a good place to see birds, a beaver dam, and sandhill plums. The trail goes through a plum thicket and the plums look so tastey it is hard to leave them for the birds to eat.

This 1920's mansion was donated to the city as a museum. There is quite a collection of things inside from fossils to antiques. It is only a few blocks from the park where the Scottish Festival is held at 1130 E. Euclid. My wife and I parked near here and walked to the museum on the day of the festival.

This is the observation tower at Maxwell Game Refuge. You can climb this tower that sits on a hill and see most of the refuge. Beyond the tower is a road where you can drive your car in to the refuge. Once when we were there the entire herd of buffalo seemed to be standing in the road and we waited a long time for them to move out of the way. To see some photos of the bison up close look at the travelogues.

'Give me a home where the buffalo roam...' Words from the state song of Kansas, 'Home on the Range'. Here you can see a group of bison on a hill top near sun set. There were once millions of buffalo in Kansas but not any more. This is one of the few places to see them wild this way. The reason you can see them at all is thanks to a man named John Maxwell who drove a small herd of buffalo in to this area in 1859 and established a ranch. I can't imagine how hard it must have been to herd wild buffalo on horse back and then protect them for many years to establish this refuge. He did all that while building a homestead, starting a business, and raising a family (Maxwell's son was the first white child born in Mcpherson county). John Maxwell was a pioneer with vision and determination. You should come here and enjoy the legacy he left for the people of the Kansas.

This is one of the nice parks in McPherson. Some of the geese are tame and can be fed. Others are wild ones.

If you enlarge this picture you will see that the citizens of Canton near the game refuge have a sense of humor. They have labelled one water tower for hot water and one for cold.

Another view of the lake. There are picnic spots here, places to fish, a boat ramp, and nature trail around the lake.

McPherson Fishing Lake is right next to Maxwell Game Refuge. There is a great deal of nature to see around McPherson in the rural areas.
