Perkins is on the main road in to McPherson when you exit from I-135. We had good food and good service there.

Favorite Dish: Our meals were good but the best thing I had there was a slice of pie for dessert.

brdwtchr Says:  This stone marker near highway 56 shows the routes of the famous trails. The chisolm trail went to Abilene and was used by cowboys herding cattle. The Santa Fe trail was a trade route from the eastern US to Spanish colony of Santa Fe in New Mexico. Santa Fe trail goes to...

This is not a great picture..., McPherson

brdwtchr Says:  This is not a great picture but it shows two important things. There is a flock of wild turkeys in a green field of winter wheat. The turkeys are cautious and to sneak up on them for a better picture was not possible. There is much wildlife around the area of McPherson. The...

Three deer leaped out of this draw in to the path of our car. We stopped in time. The deer ran back in to the woods with their white tails held high in alarm. At one time seeing a deer in Kansas was a rare thing. The state did such a good job of managing the deer and regulating hunting that now there are almost too many deer. Be careful while driving because the deer don't always look before leaping in to the road.

brdwtchr Says:  McPherson lake is near the game refuge. Drive around the lake and you will find this nature trail. The nature trail is a good place to see birds, a beaver dam, and sandhill plums. The trail goes through a plum thicket and the plums look so tastey it is hard to leave them for...

brdwtchr Says:  This 1920's mansion was donated to the city as a museum. There is quite a collection of things inside from fossils to antiques. It is only a few blocks from the park where the Scottish Festival is held at 1130 E. Euclid. My wife and I parked near here and walked to the...

brdwtchr Says:  This is the observation tower at Maxwell Game Refuge. You can climb this tower that sits on a hill and see most of the refuge. Beyond the tower is a road where you can drive your car in to the refuge. Once when we were there the entire herd of buffalo seemed to be standing...

brdwtchr Says:  'Give me a home where the buffalo roam...' Words from the state song of Kansas, 'Home on the Range'. Here you can see a group of bison on a hill top near sun set. There were once millions of buffalo in Kansas but not any more. This is one of the few places to see them wild...

Favorite thing: For me the Scottish Festival and Maxwell Game Refuge are the two best things in McPherson. There are plenty of things to see here if you take the time. There is a model railroad layout, antique auto restoration, opera house, and interesting stores. Many of those places require tours to be booked in advance. Can find out about making a tour appointment at the web site for McPherson. To enjoy most trips better it does not hurt to do some research. To research McPherson go to www.mcphersonks.org .
