 | Overland Park Restaurants | Tips 1 - 10 of 35 | | There are several Bo Ling's in the KC metro area, one in Florida. My favorite is this one, in Overland Park, Kansas. Bo Ling's is frequently listed as Kansas City's top Chinese restaurant, and for a reason - quality food, and the best service found. The prices are very reasonable for such an outstanding meal.
General Tso's chicken. Wow! It seems that so many places use junk chicken when making this dish, and put so much breading and spice in it you can't tell if you're eating chicken or alligator. Not at Bo Ling's. On my last visit I tried this dish for the first time and was amazed at how flavorful and tender the chicken was, but still with a crispy breading and spiiicccyyy sauce. Mildred has a great location in old downtown Overland Park, right next to the clock tower, a popular outdoor meeting place and often the site of musical performances. Immediately to the rear of Mildred's is the farmer's market so the place is especially busy on Saturday mornings - and the clientele is an interesting array of humanity, making for wonderful people-watching.

A favorite gathering spot for coffee and conversation, and not just for Christians gathering for Bible studies. I understand that Homer's is owned by the Christian Business Men's Committee. But - please understand that no one will preach to you or try to convert you, they're just here to give you a pleasant place to hang out. Bright and cheery atmosphere with wholesome looking young people serving you - no nose rings or head to toe tattoos here. Jazz playing on a nice sound system. Better yet, there are some stellar music groups playing on Friday and Saturday nights. Check their web site for schedule. My favorite is Second Mile - a talented band made up of some close friends. Great looking pastries in the counters made me wish I weren't on a low-carb diet. The coffee is excellent. Selection of specialty soft drinks available.
I go for the coffee breve or the mocha breve. Rich, full flavor, but not bitter. Bigger servings than you get elsewhere for the same amount of money. A popular dining destination for tourists and locals, alike. A lot of its draw is the atmosphere - casual dining surrounded by a virtual museum of rock 'n roll memorabilia collected by Dick Clark. A number of the television monitors are showing clips from the old American Bandstand music and dance shows (made me feel old.) The food is good, too - not spectacular, but good, and the service is friendly and helpful. The crowds wouldn't keep coming back just for the eye candy. I've only been there twice, and one time was for a wedding anniversery in a private room. But on the second occasion, the waitress went out of her way to make certain I could get a meal within the restrictions of my diet. I wish I had tipped her more.
My only full meal was grilled chicken with prosciutto and provolone - nicely done. Excellent salad with balsamic vinaigrette dressing. This Greek fast food emporium has been in the mid-town, older section of Overland Park for as long as I can remember. I believe that it is a long-standing family restaurant, but was unable to question anybody about it on my last visit. They were just too busy. You can count on a nice meal, a gyro, or some of those incredible Greek pastries here, for very little money.
Several good things on the menu, so I usually go for a combination plate that includes Greek salad, pita, gyro meat, spanakopita, moussaka, and dolmates. I especially enjoy the moussaka, even though I normally despise eggplant. All this for US$6.95. I have eaten food from one of the three Jack Stack locations on many occasions as it is frequently served at catered affairs in the Kansas City area. Not until April 1 of 2003 did I manage to eat in their Overland Park restaurant. If you're expecting a smokey, dirty barbecue joint, you're in the wrong place. Jack Stack is suburban with suburban prices. But the quality is outstanding and the setting is very nice. My server was very polite, but stiff - not like the casual, friendly style I'm accustomed to in these parts. But maybe he was new and still not comfortable. Jack Stack ships all over the world to its web site and catalog customers.
I have usually had brisket and sausage at catered dinners, but on my visit to the restaurant I had burnt ends - done perfectly. Charred on the outside, tender enough inside to cut with a fork. I prefer the original sauce over the spicy. Another personal choice - I get the beans instead of fries. Not that the fries aren't quite good, just a testimony to the flavor of the beans.

Barley's likes to tell everybody they have 99 draught different beers available, and that may be true, but they are also a popular spot to dine. The varied menu includes pizzas, steaks, sandwiches, salads, ribs, etc. Chatting with a couple of regulars sitting next to me, I learned that the food is uniformly good, no matter what the choice, except for the fish. (We're in Kansas, remember.) I liked the service, friendly, but not over-the-top fake "Hi Guys, I'll be your server tonight" type we've grown to expect; and the decor which featured ferns, but just a few, and not a single wall was covered with cheap pseudo-antiques. As for the brews - they don't make their own here, but they feature beers from area breweries. Give those a try.
Based on one visit in which I forgot my glasses and couldn't read the menu: A very nice Manhattan (something) sandwich, kinda like a Reuben but with smoked turkey in addition to the corned beef. Very tasty, and the cole slaw was crunchy and creamy. The server recommended a Muddy Mo Stout from Kansas City's 75th Street Brewery, earning himself an extra large tip. I fell in love with this stuff, but unfortunately, it's no longer available here. Mimi's Cafe is a chain restaurant which we first tried while visiting San Diego. We were delighted when we learned that were locating within a five minute drive of our home. Mimi's has a nice atmosphere (described as French country), excellent menu variety and service.

I'm going to let the world in on a secret. But don't tell anybody you heard it from me. Every town or city of any size has its hometown favorite eating places that visitors seldom find, unless taken there by a local. One of those is Fritz's Chili in Overland Park. It's been in the same location since the 1950s (apparently without changing the decor), dishing out their unique chili and little else. Don't come to Fritz's expecting a tomato-based soup. It's not made with tomatoes (you can pay extra for catsup) and it is served on a plate. When you are seated, tell your friendly waitress that you are a first-timer and she will bring you an instruction sheet. Basically you will be indicating the size of plate you want, with or without beans, and anything you might want to add, like cheese, onions, peppers, etc. There is chili sauce and two choices of vinegars on the table.
In spite of driving by this place for years - no decades - I made my first visit in January of 2004. On this occasion, I enjoyed chili (ground beef) with a small amount of beans, and topped that with a side order of cheddar cheese. I added some chili powder, and a dash of vinegar from a bottle that had hot peppers in it. Good stuff. Hayward and Hattie Spears have been smoking meats since 1972 in Overland Park and continue to have a great and loyal following. Doesn't quite have the "soulful atmosphere" as some of the bbq joints in the older parts of town, but it is a pleasant place to chow down, and the barbecue is tender and tasty. Its location is easy for us suburbanites to get to. Also has a meeting or banquet facility. Addendum (February 05): Visited Hayward's again. The quality and service have noticeably declined. So has the dinner-time crowd. I won't be back soon, there are too many better barbeque joints in the area.
