Pawnee Rock is a sandstone outcropping standing high above he surrounding prairie. It was a landmark on the Santa Fe trail. Sad to say that the rock is only half of it's original size. The top half was quarried off to use the stones for building towns and homes.
I loved this sign! It tells about how a young Kit Carson was camping at Pawnee Rock. He heard his mule moving around in the dark night and thought it was a Pawnee indian sneaking up on him. He got excited and shot his own mule. Kit's friends thought it was so funny they called the camp site PAWNEE ROCK. Kit Carson went on to become one of the bravest and most famous frontiersmen of the Old West. Just goes to show you that even great men like Kit Carson can have a 'blonde' moment.
Watch out for box turtles in the roads near Pawnee Rock. I used to keep one for a pet. When I see them I stop if I can and move them out of the road. Please don't run over the turtles. They are the state reptile of Kansas.
Here is monument on top of Pawnee Rock. In corner of photo you can see platform. From top of platform is good view of surrounding country side.
