Fort Riley has been the site of history. It was established to guard the Oregon and Santa Fe trails during the early days of US history. Later, forces from the 1st Infantry Division participated in every major conflict where U.S. Army forces were called into action, including in the Gulf War. The 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) was headquartered in Fort Riley until the mid 1990's. The transfer of the Big Red One headquarters has not been kind to Fort Riley. Shortly after that, one of Fort Riley's recent residents committed a terrorist attack in Oklahoma City. I would not try to cause offense among a Fort Riley resident by reminding them of this part of history.
This clock tower is on top of the building which houses the Cavalry museum. It is a great museum for learning about history. Go out of the back door in the gift shop and the Regimental Museum will be in front of you. It is also a good museum. The museums are free to visit when you are at Fort Riley.
