The two main historical sites border a parade field on the Main Post. Custer House was, at one time, the residence of General Custer. It is a one story limestone building situated among two story limestone officer housing. It is located at 24 Sheridan Avenue. It is open to the public. The opening times of the Custer House may be extremely limited during the winter (such as during weekends only or not at all).
Across from the parade field is the Cavalry Museum. (Building 205). There are a number of small, but interesting exhibits there. Admission is free to both museums.
At the open house we watched a performance by these young soldiers on horse back. They are the Fort Riley honor guard. There are more photos of them dueling with swords and jumping obstacles in travelogue for Honor Guard.
