Salina Things to Do

  • Downtown Salina

The local chamber of commerce publishes a superb guide to over two dozen historical and architecturally significant landmarks in the city center, from Art Deco facades to churches to Victorian homes. The grand post office built in 1938 is now home to the Smoky Hill Museum, open Tues-Fri 12-5, Sat 10-5, Sun 1-5, no admission charged....

The Central Mall has this great aquarium inside of it. The 15,000 gallon aquarium holds kinds of fish native to Kansas. It is most fun to see the fish when they are getting fed. As a fishermen it was fun for me to see the big catfish and bass in the aquarium. The mall also has every thing you would normally find at a large indoor shopping complex.

Salina Restaurants

  • Lenores La Casita

La Casita's prices are amazingly low for the quality of the Mexican food. The Alexander special with refried beans. It's kind of like a tostada, but bigger and with spicy meat. The refried beans are the best I've ever had.

  • The Cozy Inn

The Cozy Inn is a very small restaurant and a Salina institution. Inside there is only seating for 6-8 people at the counter. They do have a carry-out window where you can buy a dozen burgers and take them away in a brown paper bag. Cozy - their burgers...small ones kind of like White Castle, but with LOTS of onions and a bit greasy (the good kind...

Red Lobster is a big chain of restaurants that serves good sea food. In Kansas we can't get good seafood as easily as in places closer to the ocean. I like to go to Red Lobster some times when I am craving fish or crab legs. If you have been to any one of the Red Lobster restaurants they are all similar. I like the shell fish a lot. My most...

They only run movies from Thursday night until Sunday night, but the movies are a great selection of foreign films, sleeper films, and independent films. The theater is fairly small, but the seating is comfortable and it has digital surround sound.

Salina Transportation

WHEN WE TRAVEL FROM NEBRASKA TO TEXAS, WE USUALLY MAKE IT A POINT TO GAS UP OUR CARS AT THE SAM'S CLUB IN SALINA, KANSAS. They often have the cheapest gas price of the whole trip. Not always, but often. Of course you need a Sam's Club card to get the full discount. It is located on 9th Street at the south end of Salina, between exits 89 and 90 off...

  • I-70 is the logical choice for...

I-70 is the logical choice for getting to Salina. Salina is situated just east of the midpoint of the state on I-70. If you are coming from the south or north, I-135 will get you here. There is a small airport in Salina with flights daily to and from Kansas City and Denver.Unfortunately, there is no public transit system in Salina. Either you have...

THEY HAVE a pharmacy in this Sam's. Just outside the main entrance is a liquor store that features the wines of the Smoky Hill Winery, which is north of town. The prices here by Sams are usually a dollar a bottle less than at the winery itself. not much

  • A taste of Mexico

Like many other towns in Kansas, there is a large Mexican community and this seemed to be one of the larger stores catering for their needs. This picture is of a sign nearby, nothing to do with 'la tienda' but I thought it was cool and helps give a flavor of the area. Across the street from the cantina was a former motel turned into private...

Salina Local Customs

  • Smoky Hill River Festival

For three and a half days in June, Oakdale Park on the banks of the Smoky Hill River Festival, is host to a festival of music, art, food, and family fun. They bring in some top notch entertainers for the event.

  • Salina is in an area famous...

Salina is in an area famous for production of wheat. In Spring time look for green fields of winter wheat that look like big bright green lawns. The giant combines harvesting the wheat in Summer are another interesting sight.

  • Don't Forget Insurance

If your current health insurance doesn't cover you while your abroad, you should consider getting international travel insurance just in case something should go wrong.

Salina Off The Beaten Path

  • A very nice winery

The Smoky Hill Winery is located just north of Salina, Kansas. From the intersection of I-35 and I-70, go two miles east on I-70, then two miles north on hwy. 143 (which is 9th st. in Salina). Their wines are some of the best we have tasted in a small winery. (tip: You can taste the wines at the winery itself, but they may run one or two dollars...

  • Salina Municipal Airport

The world beat a path to Salina in March 2005 when Steve Fossett used the local airport as Mission Control for the recordbreaking Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer. When laden with fuel his unique jet needed an extra-long runway to take off and Salina's airport fit the bill with nearly 3 miles of asphalt. The airport has clearance for emergency space...

  • The Land Institute

Wes Jackson's Land Institute is an agricultural research center established by the author of books like 'New Roots for Agriculture' and 'Becoming Native to this Place.' I think it's well worth knowing what he's doing and if you've read any of his books you will probably fancy driving up and having a look. Basically, Wes is proposing an alternative...

Favorite thing: Remember this one piece of trivia - if the Space Shuttle had to land in the middle of the US, Salina could handle it. The airport's runway is one of very few that are long enough for the Shuttle to land on.
