Lake Perry State Park and Wildlife Area

by basstbn Updated Jan 26, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Early day cartographers' maps designated the entire plains area of the American territories as "The Great Desert." To be sure there was vegetation, lots of it -especially grasses, but no great rivers, and no lakes. Thanks to the US Corp of Engineers and depression-era works programs, there are now many good-sized reservoirs scattered across the state of Kansas.

One of these is Lake Perry, located in a hilly, wooded area north of Lawrence and Topeka. It is a popular lake for fishing, boating, swimming, and camping. As with all state lakes, there are no hotels, lodges, or resorts on the lake - only rustic camping facilities, and a minimum of dining facilities.

The park and wildlife area covers more than 11,000 acres, better than a thousand of which are marshland. It is an excellent place to watch and hunt waterfowl.

    Tinker to Evers to Chance

by basstbn Updated Jan 27, 2007

If there were a category for sports history or sports trivia, I would place this tip there; maybe it should be in off-the-beaten path, because the town of Muscotah is surely that. Muscotah? - it's the birthplace of baseball Hall of Famer, Joe Tinker, immortalized as the shortstop of the famous "Tinker to Evers to Chance" double play combination for the Chicago Cubs. Tinker played in the majors from 1902 to 1916.

Note - Muscotah is a town of about 200 people in north central Kansas, and has no amenities (restaurants, motels, etc.)
